Anyone want to discuss HP7?

So, I think they they completely effed up the horcruxes storyline in the 6th movie, but I thought this one recovered as well as it could.   I got teary at the Hedwig and George parts and thought the conversations between Harry and Ron were especially well-played.  Overall, it restored my faith in the film series, although they still have a lot of ground to cover in the last one.

I thought it was the visually prettiest and most interesting film since 3. I especially thought the deathly hallows story part was artistic and beautiful.

I'm still confused about the burrow.  Wasn't it destroyed in 6?

Re: Anyone want to discuss HP7?

  • I agree with all of this. It was probably my favorite movie. Dark subjects, but it was visually more well-done, somehow. I also agree with the deathly hallows being gorgeously done. I was very impressed.

I liked how they managed to cut details without completely butchering the story. I was kind of looking forward to seeing the mural on Luna's ceiling, but I understood why little things like that had to be cut. Same with Harry not being Polyjuiced for the wedding. I did wish they did a little bit with the trio not going to Hogwarts at the beginning, since Mrs. Weasley was so fixated on it. Most of my complaints, however, are just under the header of "How I Would Have Done Things Differently" instead of "Things They Screwed Up."

I guess they re-built the burrow? Even an offhand mention of that would have been nice, I agree. Malfoy Manor was a bit rushed, but again, it was exceptionally well done with how much they had to jam in.

I can't wait for the next one. Stupid July. I did think they ended it perfectly. We were all debating where they'd cut it  and none of us guessed that, but it was perfect. And I cried.

The next one is going to be SO much action, though. Holy crap. I wonder if they're going to do anything with Gringotts at all, since they didn't do anything with the real vs. fake sword and didn't even really show where it ended up.

  • I thought the cut stop was perfect too.

I still don't understand how they are going to find the rest of the horcruxes without all Dumbledore's information about Helga Hufflepuff's cup and Riddle courting her for it and without Dumbledore's suspicions about Nagini.  I suspect Hermione will just figure it all out.

Oh, I was irrationally squigged out about the naked Harry and Hermione embrace Ron sees before destroying the locket.  No need for so much flesh.  And I was disappointed that they didn't include Harry's "She's like a sister; she cried every night you were gone" conversation with Ron b/c I thought that was an emotional high point in the books.

I thought the scene where Hermione oblivates her parents was heartwrenching, moreso than he explanation of it in the books.

  • I agree, that was weird and unnecessary. I'm glad it came AFTER the dance scene though because I wasn't sure where that was going at first and others in the theater seemed confused.

Hermione is the Mulder of the HP-verse in the movies I guess. The wacky ideas will just come to her and everyone will Scully her and be all "Oh Hermione, you're so silly!" and then she'll be right.

Are we the only ones that have seen it so far? Come on, people!

YES. I could barely get my jaw off the floor when I saw the naked make out. Like, holy crap man.I was shocked.

And yes, I was really disappointed that there wasn't more of the mushy explanation about Hermione crying every night and whatnot. I loved that part of the book. I was also a little disappointed with the Harry/Ginny kiss. It was funny how they did it with Fred (George?..) in the kitchen, but in the book it was such an intense moment. I thought it fell a little flat. I was also very confused by the dancing scene in the tent.

The part where Harry and Hermione are in Godric's Hollow was so creepy. The old lady was terrifying. And the part where Hermione sees the flies and discovers the body, with the blood spatters and everything, blech, that was some scary shiz.

Overall I really liked it, the Dobby scene was SO sad, I got a little misty. I also really love the girl who plays Luna. She was a little over the top before, but she's got the character figured out now I think and I really liked her sweet, funny little quips. I thought they did a good job of the little bits of humor. They never seemed out of place despite how dark the movie was overall.

  • I'm nodding my head lots as I read this thread.  I went and saw it last night.  After taking care of a baby and a sick husband all day, once they were in bed I said peace out, I'm going to a movie!  The beauty of a movie theater next door.

I really enjoyed it.  It was dark, but so was the book.  Loved how they told the story of the Hallows, and thought they cut it at the perfect spot. The seven Harrys and the subsequent chase were really well done.

There is so much backstory and development in the book, no possible way they could have fit it all in.  Kreacher's story (and Harry winning his loyalty) was totally glossed over.  I assume we'll get more of Dumbledore's backstory from Aberforth and Snape in the next one.

I felt they hit the right notes with the deaths/heart wrenching moments, with the exception of Mad Eye.  That felt oddly flat.

  • I was avoiding this thread b/c I didn't want spoilers, but then I realized I already read the book, der. Seeing it with Bug tomorrow, so freaking excited.

"The meek shall inherit the earth" isn't about children. It's about deer. We're all going to get messed the fuckup by a bunch of cloned super-deer.- samfish2bcrab

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
  • I liked it! There were some details that they got wrong that bothered me (Grindelwald giving up Dumbledore, not using the invisibility cloak), but overall it was visually great and they hit the important points.

Loved the 7 Harrys, especially Harry in a bra. Loved the Tale of the Three Brothers animation.

And thanks to Cali for watching the Seaninator. She survived and she even gave him back to me afterwards. :)

  • I was generally happy, and not as dissatisfied with the changes/omissions as I have been with the other movies.

I would have liked to see the goodbye with Harry and Dudley, and I would have liked to see Wormtail get killed by his silver hand.

    image
  • Yeah, I'm thinking they didn't set up the Gringott's robbery to happen in pt 2, which is kind of a shame because it was one of the most tense and action-y parts of the book, and also is a testament to what the three of them can plot and accomplish.  I guess I will just have to imagine the firey replicating treasure, lol.

I was also disappointed a bit in the Bathilda scene in Godric's Hallow . . . I thought they should have shown Nagini calling V-mort and him arriving just a second too late to get H&H--I thought the way they were able to slip past him in the book was amazing and again, shows what they can do.

But overall I did like the movie and know they can't have EVERY detail in there, so I wasn't disappointed.

I was also a little sad to not see the Dudley/Harry goodbye.

And I was wondering why they didn't do Voldemort arriving just as they were escaping from Godric's Hollow. It added so much to the action and intensity in the book.

  • Hmmmm.  After reading the responses, I think I might have been more disappointed in the omissions if I better remembered the book.  I think I'm glad I haven't re-read it yet.

I agree here. Between me and the two friends I saw it with, only one had reread and every time I or the other friend would say how much we loved it, the friend who had reread would say "Yeah, it was great, but I was really hoping they'd leave detail xyz in!"

They really have to be enjoyed as separate entities. Because on its own, it was a damn good movie. Having the book story so firm in your head just feels like watching a DVD and skipping over random scenes.

  • I made the mistake of re-reading the book the few days leading up to the movie. Right off the bat, I was thinking, "well, they left that out, and that, etc."

I agree, Hermoine obliviating her parents made me tear up even before the credits. I thought the movie rushed through the Hedwig dying thing. It was just a blip, and seemed like such a huge part of the book. Also agree that I wish the Dudley/Harry goodbye was left in, as well as Harry telling Ron "she's like my sister."

I think it ended at just the right spot and I can't wait until July, when I am sure I will spend all three hours a bawling, blubbering mess.

When the book first came out, I reread the Snape reveal three times in a row, I loved it that much. Seriously, I would finish "The Prince's Tale" chapter, and flip right back to the first page of it and reread it again. Plus I've reread the book twice since then. I'm really looking forward to it.

I haven't seen the movie yet. We're going Friday. I'm really excited, although I did just finishing rereading the book about 2 weeks ago, so I hope that I'm too disappointed by changes/omissions.
