I figured I'd bring the conversation over to our board.
What's everyone's thoughts on the new airport screenings?? It's clearly become the hot topic since this week is the highest travel week of the year.
I, for one, could really care less. I mean, I've seen some images from the new scanners and I would hardly classify them as "naked pictures". Their just come computer generated outline of my body. Real sexy. So ya, I'm fine with having to go through them. What I don't like is that you are apparently not near your bags when you have to go thru the scanner so if someone wants to walk off with your stuff (ie. computer, purse) then I suppose they could (from what I've read).
As for the enhanced patdowns....I'm not really sure how I feel about it. Sorta in the middle about it.
Re: Since everyone else is talking about it....
I have to say that I do have a problem with this, especially after reading this article:
http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/AddPost.aspx?PostID=45695074
This breast cancer survivor had to remove her prosthetic breast during a "pat-down." My grandma had a prosthetic breast. My mom has an implant. Is the next "legal search" going to be trying to find out what is in the saline of her implant?? I have only flown a few times in my life, but this still has me outraged. What happened to American citizens' right to privacy? We really have none. This invasion of privacy is wrong and it shouldn't be tolerated. As for the body scans, they're probably not even safe, as we are being led to believe. Those who are susceptible to cancer, women who are pregnant and little kids should not be exposed to the radiation. I am sorry if I sound a little crazy, I don't usually get heated about things
But all people other than my DH are not allowed to touch my entire body. And having cancer so close to me does not make me want to be exposed to anything that could further expand my risk.
End rant.
i guess i dont really have too much of a problem with it. i dont fly that much, and when i do, it's because i'm excited to go somewhere, so i think i would be too excited to care if someone had to pat me down.
this is a little strange though...

i know they are trying to keep things safe, but it made me uneasy because it's just a little kid :

yea I heard about that too. That makes me upset as well - however I think most of the horror stories we're hearing about are NOT the norm and are caused by some TSA agent who's on a power trip. I don't know.
As for the radiation from the scanners...I've heard different things. I've heard that they give off as much radiation as flying at 30,000 ft for 3 minutes - less than what a normal dentist xray gives off. Now, I do agree that nobody knows what the long term affects are going to be from this, but I'm pretty sure that the handful of times I fly each year (at the most!) isn't going to do much.
I really don't know. I can see both sides of the argument.
I JUST read an article about this very story
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20101122/ts_yblog_thelookout/more-tsa-horror-stories-emerge-while-agency-ponders-what-to-do
I have serious issues with it due to the radiation. It's just not safe. As a person whose family is prone to cancer, I don't like it at all. At the same time, I am infuriated by the searches. There are watch lists and no fly lists for a reason. And I'll probably get flamed for it, but there's a reason that racial profiling and profiling specific behaviors works.
It's disgusting that there are a few sick f*cks out there that make it so that the rest of us lose the basic right to privacy.
RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.

I have mixed feelings about it. While I understand the importance for security and everything, I feel that the "pat down" may be a little too intrusive, thats just me though and thats going off of the few videos that I've seen, I would definitely feel really uncomfortable with someone that I didn't know running their hands along my boobs. Professional or not, it just isn't something that I would be comfortable with.
As for the scanners I'm torn on that too, you would think that logically they wouldn't put out a device that seriously increases your risks for cancer from the xrays, but at the same time it doesn't seem that different than the xray machines used in the medical field and they have you wear lead over the exposed parts that they aren't shooting so....idk
Good luck with your trip though! Let us know how it goes!
I think it's completely crazy. Why is this even necessary?
FYI- Pistole is the head of TSA. "Pistole was shown videos of people being patted down where the screeners touched the breasts of a woman, felt into the pants of another person and felt the crotch of a man. He said all three cases were proper and that the gloves of the screener who felt inside the pants were then tested for explosive trace residue. "
Obama and Hillary Clinton have both publicly called for less intrusive/less invasive screening. The republican from Florida who is going to be the Transportation Committee chairman of the House starting in Jan. also thinks it's completely overstepping our rights and freedoms.
I personally don't want anyone other than my husband patting me down in that matter! It's bad enough to mentally prepare for a physical or full body derm check... Now I have to do that just to go see my family, go on vacation, or go on business trips, too? And who are the screeners? I read somewhere that they "could" have prior felony convictions... as long as it was at least 10 years ago. So former sexual predators could be feeling you up at the airport. Nice. I flew out of both Amsterdam and Scotland last year- and didn't even have to take off my shoes nor my jacket in either place. And yet here we will soon be practically strip-searched just to make us more safe.
I have been reading about this b/c I wanted to know what to expect when I fly this week. I am not looking forward to it, at all! I don't want the extra radiation- I am exposed to enough stuff at work (I'm a scientist)... I don't need extra exposure to known cancer-causing agents. And my alternative is to have someone feel me up. Great. I've read the FDA reports stating the safety- however, the FDA is not always right and approves drugs and treatments all of the time that are later pulled off the shelves. The amount of radiation is smaller than a normal x-ray, however, the radiation is concentrated on your skin. The long term effect of this kind of exposure is not known.
