This year, I shall be thankful

for my manly husband.

That's what my friend just told me when I told her this story:

I talked to MIL yesterday about turkey day, and who's making what.  The topic of mashed potatoes came up, and she said she didn't want my fresh mashed potatoes, that she insisted on the kind from the box, that they are better (Indifferent)

And she told me my fresh green beans sauteed with garlic, lemon and a little salt are bland.  Did I mention she's smoked for more that 50 years and probably has no taste buds left?

After we got off the phone, I told DH about the whole thing.  He put a stop to it right away.  I didn't hear the whole conversation, but he pretty much called her and was like "mom, i don't want the boxed kind, meghann will be making the fresh kind. end of discussion".

Oh, and she seems to have made up her mind that I don't have the time to make the things I've told her I am making, so now I feel the need to step it up and make things even fancier.

  • Wow, what kind of person says those things?!  Here, you're ready to go out of your way and make something much nicer and healthier and she shows no appreciation.  Kudos to your man!!

I'm thinking you need to sneak in a glitter punch to her, good luck getting through that meal.

    what she said!

  • I think it's going to be a passive agressive war.  I forsee comments about how my food doesn't have anything artificial or chemical in it.  And her curling her lip and drinking her wine.
  • I agree - I think you need to sneak in a glitter punch, too.  Seriously?  Kudos to your H for saying what he did though.

I am so glad I don't have to put up with the ILs this year for any holida...unless, by some random coincidence, H comes down on orders to deploy and they all come to town. I'll probably just stay away until they leave.

  • Good for your DH! I think I'd have said something like "well you can cook artificial crap all day long but I prefer not polluting my body like that". Although I'm sure that would have really started something, but sometimes you just gotta get stuff out in the air!
  • Wow, she is tasteless on so many levels, huh?  What a wench!

And kudos to H for setting her straight.  I'd still want to smack her if I were you.  In fact, I'm me and I still want to smack her on your behalf.

  • make even more. do it. do it awesome.

This made me think... is your MIL still making anything on the menu?  If she is, you should make it too, only make it natural and make it better!  Let her see what everyone reaches for.  Ha!

  • I didn't even mention that I'm also making an appetizer, rolls, and ice cream.  I mentioned that there would be ice cream with the pie, but not that it would be homemade (and chamomile vanilla, btw).

She's still doing the turkey, stuffing and gravy.  Oh, and microwaving broccoli in cheese sauce (the frozen kind).  I have no desire to make any of those, so I'm just going to let it be.
