Pet Shelter

Hi All,

I'm fairly new to the nest but I was wondering if anyone knew of good shelters to adopt a dog? We are finalizing on our new home December 10th (woo!) and were looking into getting a pet in the spring when it starts getting nice out again, but I wanted to do some research and hunt around for a shelter. I'm currently in Billerica Ma but wouldn't mind traveling too far, I'm close to the NH boarder and right near 495.

thanks for any help you girls can give!

Re: Pet Shelter

  • Not sure how far Sterling is from you, but the sterling shelter is wonderful. We adopted our first dog from there.

They have a website: sterlingshelter.org and the overturn of animals is unreal. Site changes pretty much daily and not even all the animals are on the site. Smile

    Good luck!

  • Not sure if Methuen is near you but I have been to Nevins before and it seemed really  nice and they had a pretty big group of animals to adopt. Here is the link: Nevins

    Hope this helps!

  • I don't have a whole lot of personal experience with them but there's also the Lowell Humane Society.
  • I'm just an occasional lurker, but I highly recommend Buddy Dog in Sudbury. I volunteer there and it's a great shelter.

  • milton animal shelter. It's just south of boston. They are involved with a pilot program that rescues dogs from crowded shelters around Massachusetts (the dogs don't come from the south) They thoroughly temperment test all their dogs and they are very honest about whether or not a dog will be a good fit for your family. www.miltonanimalleague.org I also recommend looking on www.petfinder.com that will give you a listing of animals in most shelters near you. Hope this helps!
  • We had a great experience adopting a pet from the Angell shelter branch of the MSPCA and they recommended Nevins Farm in Methuen highly (another MSPCA branch). I also know a few families who go there to visit with the animals and say it's a great place.

  • Recommend Sterling also, volunteered there for about 4 years. Really good animal shelter, a lot of their puppies come from kill shelters down south.
