Questions for the runners

I'm running my first 'real' race this week - a 10k turkey trot (yay!). I have questions!

- What I should expect?

- What I should plan for?

- What are the 'rules of the road'? I want to be a polite runner out there.

- How early should we get there? (It's a fairly small/local run)

- Is a race time generally shorter or faster than a personal run? (I want to mentally be prepared)

- Anything else I should know?

TIA! :)

Re: Questions for the runners

  • I'm running my first 'real' race this week - a 10k turkey trot (yay!). I have questions!  YAY for running your first "real" race!!!!

    - What I should expect?  Hmm, excitement, competitiveness from some, crowds (ie: you will be running next to a lot of other people going the exact same way as you).

    - What I should plan for?  Fuel and hydrate the day before.  Eat your typical breakfast.  Don't wear anything that you haven't already worn to run in.  Don't break in new shoes on race day.

    - What are the 'rules of the road'? I want to be a polite runner out there.  If you need to pass someone, do so on the left and say "on your left" before you pass.  If someone says this to you, try to move over a bit to your right.  Let those who are super competitive, trying to place, start in the front of the pack.

    - How early should we get there? (It's a fairly small/local run)  Depends on parking, if you need to use the facilities, if you want to warm up, if you need to pick up your bib, etc.  At least 30 minutes prior to gun time.

    - Is a race time generally shorter or faster than a personal run? (I want to mentally be prepared)   Typically faster because you are full of adrenaline, excitement, fellow runners are pushing you to do your best, etc.

    - Anything else I should know? Have fun.  Don't worry about others.  Don't, don't, don't go out to fast.  This is a typical "mistake" that many runners do...they always sprint from the start which then comes back to haunt them in the end.   Oh, and "run your own race!"  You are the one who trained for this so don't like Suzy Q in the neon yellow jacket who is sprinting by you get into your head!  Forget about her!!!

YOU WILL DO AWESOME!!!  I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think you got some great advice from kfishie. I just wanted to say Congrats on signing up for your 1st race. Good Luck!!
