Sigh. NJ Legislators Are Idiots.

OK, we discussed how the alcoholic energy drinks were banned by the FDA.  (Clicky)

Well, an idiot legislator in NJ, Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle, out of Englewood, Bergen County (MY county), has decided to take it a couple steps farther, into the inane.  And it's co-sponsored by Assemblyman Caputo.  Whatever you think of government parenting its constituents, this is just stupid.

The new proposed legislation (Bill A3437) states "No person shall knowingly sell, offer for sale, deliver, receive, or purchase for resale in this State any caffeinated alcoholic beverage.  A person who violates the provisions of this section shall be liable to a civil penalty of not less than $250 for the first violation, not less than $500 for the second violation, and $1,000 for the third and each subsequent violation."

Doesn't sound bad, until you read this:  "A caffeinated alcoholic beverage is defined in the bill as any prepackaged alcoholic beverage that has been supplemented by the manufacturer with added caffeine or other stimulant that is metabolized by the body as caffeine."

That's not just energy drinks with alcohol.  That's every beer made with coffee or chocolate.  Youngs Double Chocolate Stout, for instance.  Eric's Laughing Lemur stout, made with Ghirardelli cocoa powder.

Like I said, stupid.

If you're in NJ (I'm looking at you, Marcy & Holly & any NJ lurkers we might have), write to your legislator and explain how dumb this is?
