Real or fake? Does size matter?

Get your minds out of the gutter! I'm talking trees ladies.

Do you go for Real or Fake?

How big is your tree?

Re: Real or fake? Does size matter?

  • I love the real tree - It smells so good!

unfortunately, one of the joys of owning a cat means no tree for us -  he loves climbing them during the night and play with the decorations.

We usually go to in-laws to enjoy their tree - but my MIL has declared (2 yrs ago) that she will not put up a tree until she gets grandchildren..

    Sad

  • Real for us!  We have been buying the real deal since we got married.  They are about 5-7 feet depending on the choices.

  • Last year we finally had enough space for tree!  We bought a fake 6 foot one from Target.  DH claims he allergic to pine but I would love to get a real one at least once :)
  • Real for us.  We'd love to get a fake one, but we both had real ones when we were growing up and part of the fun for both of us when we were kids was picking out the Christmas tree.  So we're holding off on getting a fake on since we'll eventually have a family and would like to continue that tradition with them.  We usually get one between 6-7 foot.

  • We have a fake, even though I would love to have real. DH boycotted real when we moved in together because "they're too expensive" and apparently they're too much maintenence. Whatev.

So we have a 7ft pre-lit tree from Costco that is beautiful and really does look real. I hate fake trees that look fake, KWIM?

  • We have a 7.5 foot pre-lit fake tree.  I collect Lenox ornaments which are very heavy so we'll never have a real tree.  It doesn't bother me too much because I always have Yankee candles and a Scentstories player so the house still smells like a Christmas tree.
  • We have a fake 7' tree because we were pretty sure our dogs would try to eat the real one. As it turns out one of our dogs tries to eat the fake one also. Dumbass.
  • Real. My favorite part of Christmas is going to pick out a tree. Sometimes I want to get an ugly one because I'm afraid no one will take it home and love it. I never do though. I'm a loser, I know. We have 10' ceilings and I insist the tree touch it or at least be within 3 or 4".
  • We have a pre-lit fake tree, I think it is 6 feet.  It's getting old and for the past few years a section of the tree won't light and we have to put a string of lights on it.  I get so annoyed because this defeats the purpose of having a pre-lit tree.  Every year we say how we really need to get a new one but then we can't justify spending the money.  Sigh.  Maybe next year Smile

  • i have a pre-lit 12' beast of a tree (ask rose) and also an 8' (NOT pre-lit...which sucks) fake tree.
  • This is a point of contention at my house.  We have a very small fake tree but I want real.  When we move from this house I'm making sure that the next one has a room where I can set up a huge real tree.

    Mine - Southern Living

    Equals  - Branson

Hell I even gave in and let him put flashing colored lights on the house this year.  Now all I need is a stand up Elvis for the front yard.

  • We have a 7ft fake tree from Target. I was really excited about the possibility of getting another tree this year and having 2, but DH vetoed that idea saying we couldn't have as many trees as people in the house. :(

  • I grew up with real trees, but our tiny apartment and one insane cat have made the past couple of years pretty tough tree-wise.

I bought a 6ft. prelit tree last year but DH's cat (she's his cat when I don't like her) took flying leaps at it until half of the ornaments were on the ground.  I'm hoping to train her out of this since she's still pretty young.  My older cat could care less about the tree.

This year I'll probably just put up the little 3ft. tree that I've had since college along with some cheap ornaments and hope for the best!

I've been waiting for you to post all flipping day Jones.

For the record, the 12' beast has ornaments the size of my head on it. No joke. Samantha Kringle is a Christmas crazy.

She's not exaggerating. They really are as big as her head.

Sorry to make you wait, Rory Freedman.

  • Ideally I'd do a 7ish foot fake, I'm allergic to the real thing.  But psycho kitty (and space) prohibit this currently.  So we have a tiny 3ft table top tree with plastic ornaments so he can't break anything.  I have a whole big tree's worth of ornaments packed away that I hope to use again some day.
  • I would love to have a real tree, but we have two dogs. I don't think our girl dog would be a problem, but our boy dog would probably get confused. He was not trained very well as a puppy (DH's fault!) and it has taken 3 1/2 years to correct this. I don't trust him enough to bring a tree in the house.

We have a fake pre-lit tree. It's nothing special, got it on clearance earlier this year after we found out we were getting a house. It's 6 ft. Eventually I want to upgrade to a 9ft pre-lit.

Our old tree was ghetto. It was as sad looking as the Charlie Brown tree. I'm pretty sure it was older than me, the kind with the metal ends that were marked with letters you matched to the slots. Only thing is half of them were stuck in the slots, some were bent so the branched sagged, and some were just missing. I tried to face the holes towards the back, but it was still pretty sad. I chucked it when we moved out of our first apt. I had to use it at least a couple years since my MIL gave it to us, hehe.

  • I have a bit of an obsession w/ massive real trees. I blame my mother. Last year I bought a tree that was too big for our house and DH had to cut the top off because I already had the stand attached.

  • My H is a traditionalist.  We do a big real tree- Every. Single. Year.

Within a few years when we move into our next home I have plans to get a big, gaudy, fake WHITE tree and bling it out to heck with various Barbie, shoe and drink ornaments because it's my vision, dammit!  Oh, and most likely Hello Kitty as well if my dd has anything to do with it..

  • Fake tree.  I'm so severely allergic to real.

Ours is 15' (i think)... we need a ladder to decorate it.  But I love it... Just wish it was a little taller.

  • Both DH and I, growing up, had a mix of real and fake.  While I have lovely memories of going to pick out the tree, and having it dug up so we could plant it in our yard (my parents just cut down the last of our childhood christmas trees Sad) I also have memories of my mom cursing the tree becuase of how much she had to vaccuum the needles, and water the tree, and the sap being so messy.  We have a pre-lit 5-6 foot tree I got on black friday our first christmas living together.  One day we might have a real one.... when he wants to clean up after it....   :)

  • DH and I haven't put up a tree in all our years together.  We aren't Scrooges...our place is just a bit too cozy for one.  I have a large ornament collection waiting patiently for a tree.  Growing up, for about 10 years, my parents would get a real tree with the roots/bulb so it could be planted on their property after the holiday.  I always thought this was a great idea.  Not sure if we will follow that tradition - I'm thinking I want to go the fake, pre-lit route.  I can't wait until we have a house and I can go all out with a tree and decorations.
