BCP- Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo

Is anyone on this pill? Have you experienced any side effects? I first went on it when I was 19, used it for a year, then I stopped. I just went back on it in August and I seem to be experiencing some side effects. It's weird because this didn't happen the first time I went on it.

Re: BCP- Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo

  • I am on it and have been for about 5 years now without any side effects, but you know everyone responds differently to BC. Your body/hormone levels likely have changed since you were last on it, thus the change in side effects for you.  If the side effects are things that you cannot handle living with, go back to your gyno and see if you can get a lower-dose BCP.
  • I was on this a LONG time ago, when I was 16; so like 5 years ago. Anyway, the reason I got off it was because it didn't make my cycle regular; only reason why I got off it. I didn't experiance any other side effects than that, though.

     Not very helpful. Sorry! haha

LOL. This is exactly why I don't think it's too helpful to ask people about their BC experience, because since I have been in OTC-lo I can tell you the day and time that I will get my period. Everyone is unique, so I really think that you need to consult with your doctor to find the BCP that is best for you and only you.

  • I was on it for 4 months and had horrible side effects.  For one week each month I would be crazy, like want to crash my car into a brick wall crazy.  So I called up the gyn and demanded a new one.  But it works wonderful for other people, everyone's experience is different.

  • I took Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for 4 or 5 years in my teens to help with ovarian cysts. I didn't notice anything unusual. It actually made my monthly very regular and helped with the cysts, but after a while I began passing out every few weeks. That went on for about 6 months until I switched health insurance and my new doctor prescribed a different pill for me. I don't know if the pills and my passing out were related, but I haven't fainted since the switch.
  • I am currently on it, again, and I hate it!! It makes me a crazy woman! Like there's one week were I am normal me, then the next week I start to get emotional and sensitive to everything, then the week before my period I get mad about EVERYTHING and then the week of my period I just cry and cry and CRY about everything! The next time I am over on the coast I am going to visit my dr and tell them I want to switch, because I hate myself 3 weeks out of the month :(

(This is my good week, fyi! LOL)

  • I mostly lurk, but I felt I had something to contribute to this discussion so here it is. I take Ortho Cyclen, which I LOVE!!! It's very similar to Tri Cyclen, but it has a steady hormone dose. With Tri Cyclen the level of estrogen stays the same, but the Progestin levels change each week. I've heard that contributes to a lot of mood swings that some women have, because their hormones aren't stable throughout the month. It mimics your body's level of rising and falling hormones, so you're still prone to mood swings and whatnot. Also an added plus of having the steady hormone level in Ortho Cyclen is you can take the pill packs back-to-back if you want to skip a period due to a vacation or special event. My OB/GYN even said that was okay to do.
  • I was first on Ortho Tri Cyclen with no problems, it was when they switched me to the Lo version (because of headaches) that things went crazy for me.

  • I've been on Ortho-Lo for about 5.5 yrs now, and I've been fortunate enough to not have experienced any negative sides from it. It regulates my cycle, I don't experience any spotting, and I typically don't have many PMS symptons either.

I was on it for about 4 years, and I would get crazy-angry just before my period, so the doc paired it with a low dose of antidepressant. Worked wonders! I'm off both meds now, and my cycle is just as regular as it was when I was on the OTC-Lo.

But like others have said, every one is different. Talk to your doc and find something that works with your chemistry. Good luck! :-)
