Do you and your DH have any Christmas traditions you share together or with your families?

Re: Christmas Traditions?

  • not yet but i'm sure we'll be starting them this year!
  • Even when we were dating, our Christmas Eve would be spent with me working a half day and Mike would have Amanda. She'd open her gifts from us when I got home from work then we'd take her home and go to 4:00 mass with my parents, followed by lasagna dinner over my cousin's house. Spent the night over my parents' on Christmas Eve and had breakfast there, opened gifts when dad got up, then dinner over my SIL's house with all of Mike's family. We've been doing that since '08 and it'll probably stay the same. :)

Last year Amanda spent the night on the night before Christmas Eve and we went over our friends' J&S house so Amanda could play with their girls and all trade gifts with each other.  We'll be going over the Wednesday before Chrsitmas eve this year since J works midnights and she has that Wednesday off.

  • First off, "Howdy!" Maybe I missed some of your posts, but it seems like a good while since I've seen your lovely smiling face :-))

And let me say...this is such a loaded question for me! I really want to establish some new Christmas traditions with H and I as husband and wife, that do not revolve soley around our families...don't get me wrong - I love spending time with the families, but it seems like all of our major holidays when we were dating involved participating in other people's traditions...and we always spend Christmas Eve with my folks, and Christmas day with his...

I'd like for us to begin spending Christmas day together: sleeping in, having  Christmas brunch, opening presents,  watching football (Ok - so in a perfect world this is part of the day!), having dinner and well, you get the picture - just enjoying time together!

I'm all for visiting relatives on Christmas Eve, or even the day after. I'm trying to institute our tradition this year...we'll see how it turns out!

    This  :)

  • We spend Thanksgiving with H's family and Christmas with mine.  Usually we go to my parents on Christmas Eve and stay there for a couple days.

  • For as long as I can remember my family has done the typical Jewish "movies and Chinese food" day for Christmas. It's actually a family holiday for us too - the first year I was dating DH I didn't do this with my family and they got really upset.

DH for many years has spent Christmas Eve/day with a very close friend of his and her family.  So, now we spend Christmas Eve with them, stay over their house and then drive down to see my family on Christmas day. This year we'll probably exchange gifts that day also since Chanukah is crazy early (next week!) and none of us are prepared for it.

  • The first few years DH and I were dating we would  do Christmas on the 21st, we started this our first year dating because it was our 6 month anniversary and it just continued...mostly because back then we didn't spend Christmas together. But for the last two years we have been spending it together and we have switched off my parents then his since neither of our families do anything special on Christmas eve. But this is the first year (of many to come I'm sure) that DH works, so it will just be us unless my parents decide to join us, so maybe we will start making some new traditions together!!

  • We usually exchange our gifts on Christmas Eve afternoon before heading out.  We spend Christmas Eve with my family and go to midnight service.  Then Christmas morning, we have breakfast with my family since we stayed there the night before.  We head to DH family in the afternoon and usually my dad's side in the evening.

This year my extended families are celebrating the Sunday before, so on Christmas day we will be spending all day at DH's aunts house.
