why is pie crust so hard to make

I'm making a french silk pie for Tday, and I'm trying to make the pie crust. I added too much water, and now I have to start again... My grandmother can whip up a pie crust in 2 minutes I swear.. I've already called her twice:) I refuse to buy store bought crust...

I also have to go get more butter, margine and bakers chocolate. I hate the grocery store this time of year and it's too early for some wine:)

Re: why is pie crust so hard to make

  • This post scares me.  I've never made my own pie crust before (aside from like a graham cracker crust which is easy peasyand doesn't count). Yet I told my Aunt that I would bring an apple pie to her house on TG...um yea, that means I need 2 crusts.  I don't plan on making it until Thursday either...not sure how it's going to go.
  • I would either buy back up crust just in case, or start early and have plenty of supplies on hand. It's not hard, but adding the water can be tricky and that is where I screw it up most times.

  • Yea, that's kind of what I'm thinking.  I won't have a nearby open grocery store, so I'm just going to make sure I'm over prepared.

    Good luck!

  • I actually find pie crust pretty easy. Use real butter and make sure it is cold. Cut with knives (I think its easier than the pastry cutter).  After butter is cut into the flour REALLY well add COLD water slowly until it is just solid - it should still be a little crumbly. Refridgerate before rolling, and don't overhandle :)

Once you get the hang of it, I promise it goes faster.

  • I was just reading this morning in my know-it-all America's Test Kitchen cookbook how to make the best pie crust.  I've never made a pie before, but I'm going to attempt a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving.

I also find it hard to believe that I've never made a pie, since I do love to bake.

I'm crossing my fingers that all goes well tomorrow...

  • I'm on crust #3 to patch some of the first one, I want it to look pretty so it's been a process. I don't know why I am challenged when it comes to this...

  • Hmm, interesting!  I just made my first pie crust last week and have since repeated it.  I thought it was really easy.

I took 2.25 cups of flour, 1 cup margarine divided into small spoonfuls - then mix them together by hand.  Once crumbly I slowly added  up to 0.25 cups of water and mixed by hand.

Then I put it on the flour covered counter and rolled out.

  • Ugh, this is my next to do list-making homemade pie crust.

I am too impatient and I end up buying the store bought from Trader Joe's.Embarrassed

But I take the easy way out-I make pumpkin cheesecake and that is for graham cracker crust and apple crisp which requires no crust at all.

I did manage to make homemade Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls over the weekend and it came out fine.
