If you haven't gotten your ereader yet, look hard at the Kobo. I got my dogwalker a Nook and I don't think it is very intuitive.

Re: Kiz

  • Oooh, thanks!  I stopped at B&N on Saturday to check out the Nook and it seemed pretty cool.  (Of course the lady there is paid to make it look really cool.)  I like that you can get e-books anywhere and not just from Amazon like with the Kindle (or is it really not that big of deal...they were just making their sales pitch?)  She said there are 2 million+ free books.  I LIKE FREE!  I've never heard of the Kobo - I will check it out.  I already "planted a seed" in my mom's head that I might want a Nook for Christmas...it might be too late to renege on the seed...we'll see.  :-)

(Does it make me a non-lurker now that I've gotten an official page??  FUN!)

  • The Kobo is at Borders. I don't know if it fixes the things I don't like about the Nook. Here's what I don't like (and NONE of these things make it a bad device, I just feel like you have to "learn" to use it as opposed to my Kindle which I cold very easily use out of the box).

Check with B&N to be sure what I am saying is accurate as my experience is pretty limited but here are the things I didn't like.

As far as I can tell books you buy from B&N and books you get elsewhere are in different menus on the Nook. ANNOYING. You can't just see a list of all your books.

Only books you buy from B&N can be delivered wirelessly, because the device does not have an email address like my Kindle does.

I find having half the navigation through touchscreen and the other half through buttons on the Nook to be hard to get used to.

The whole thing about 2million free books, Kindle has them all too. And the whole song and dance about buying books other places besides B&N is bull. All the big stores have Digital RIghts Management (DRM). Yes, you can buy books from other stores that don't have DRM, you can do the same thing with the Kindle. I still think you do not want a Kindle because they can't use library books with overdrive easily.

I've never actually seen a Kindle close up so I'm thinking maybe "ignorance is bliss" and I could learn to like a Nook?  I'm pretty handy with gadgets so I'm not too worried.

I think you're right regarding the whole library book thing.

I don't think I need the snazzy NookColor because I don't need to read magazines on it.  I'm gunning for the basic Nook I think.

Of course now that I've decided I want one - I want it NOW because we're going to North Carolina on Thursday and it would be awesome at the airport.  :-)

So if I download a book from the library onto my computer my Nook would have to be physically plugged in to get it?

Is the extra $50 worth it for 3G?  I don't travel often and would have plenty of chances to download books from my computer...

    Too many decisions!

  • If you have wifi at home and don't travel much the 3G isn't worth it.

Yes your Nook will have to be plugged into your computer to get the library books.

You probably don't want the Nook Color at all. Will be like reading off your computer monitor.

You can learn to use the Nook. It isn't hard and it is a good ereader. I just find the things I mentioned to be unnecessary irritations

  • I don't get the Nook Color at all.  Is it just an iPad minus computing capabilities.  That seems like the worst of both worlds.

I made a comment about it being like an iPad and she kind of made a face.  I bet they are annoyed at the comparison because it's obvious their product does way less. (It does cost less though...)  Although the screen quality was amazing I think I would much rather hold a real National Geographic in my hands.  I do like that it would cut down on stacks of magazines at home that I feel guilty throwing away....but I don't like it enough to spend an extra hundred bucks for the color screen.  We just stopped getting subscriptions and that solves that.  :-)  I think the perfect solution for me would be a regular Nook and an iPhone.

  • My iPod Touch works for that kind of thing too.

But I get to be the side fling that neither of you tell the other about.
