Travel Nesties??? and others too

With all the TSA screening for flyer's on the hot bed right now I wondered with you had any thoughts about it. Is it going to effect your travel plans?

Re: Travel Nesties??? and others too

  • all of my travel is for work, so I really don't have a choice :-(
  • I don't have any travel plans in the near future.  But if I did, the only thing that would worry me would be the people alledly planning protests at security with the intent on slowing everyone else down.  That would piss me off.

The full body scans don't bother me.  The idea of the pat-downs make me a little uncomfortable, though, personally.

But if the TSA believes these measures will make us safer, than I support them.

Brian and I are going on vacation at the end of Feb. Most likely we will fly out of the airport by my parents since they are watching the girls. As of now they don't have the scanners and are doing pat downs. I'm not sure if it is all of the flyers and how much of a pat down it is. I am REALLY hoping that they get their scanners by then.  They said they will get them 2-3 months, so it will be iffy.

As I understand it, no airports are doing the pat-downs (or the scans) on everyone.  They just pull a certain number of people out of line for these additional checks.  I could be wrong though.

I read an article on MLive a couple of days ago which said that at GRR, they're more likely to pull passengers out of line for these additional checks if they're wearing skirts or bulky clothing... because you could more easily be hiding something under your clothes.  So, don't wear a skirt when you fly!

  • I think what the TSA is doing is a ridiculous overstepping of boundaries/rights to personal privacy. I am glad that they are getting lots of flack for it, because I do think their actions should be monitored. Checks and balances, if you will. I am all for being safe, but not at the expense of being touched by strangers in inappropriate ways. I do respect the job they have to do, and want to comply as much as I can, but I think some lines are being crossed. And if we all just keep complying, I am worried about just how far they might go.

That said - if we want to see XN's family for the holidays, we have to fly (or take a train that would take several days just to get there...but there goes all of your vacation days). So avoiding air travel to express my disapproval isn't possible. In theory I don't have a huge problem with the full body scans, and would rather do that then be subjected to groping. But all the reports of TSA agents passing around the images for fun, plus the question of radiation, makes that not look very appealing either.

This is not very eloquent at all and I blame my fuzzy congested head.

  • I went through a phase where I was extremely bothered by security measures a few years ago. I still don't believe that it makes us significantly safer. I have been through the full body scanner and found it to be uncomfortable. You are in there for what feels like a long time and you are wondering what is being seen. I also had a pat down in Paris last year (although I don't think it was as "thorough" as what is currently being done here). Honestly, I see all of this as a cost of flying. I am bothered by the idea of people protesting to intentionally slow the process. I think it is fine to contact TSA and DHS to register objection, but think the in airport protests go too far.
  • I'm thankful we don't have to fly to my inlaw's for thanksgiving!  I will have to fly at least 3 times in 2011, so I'm hoping that they get some of this figured out before then.  They aren't really plans I can, or am willing to, change.  I don't like the idea of radiation, BUT the radiation one gets just from being on a multi hour flight is way higher than the machines, so that's something to think about.  I don't like the idea of a pat down, but does anyone know if you can request a same sex agent to do it?  Or do you have to take whomever you're given?

This does make me a bit nervous.  I know some people flying sooner than me and I will be interested to hear their stories about how it all goes.  I've gotten pretty complacent about showing up just an hour before a flight out of GRR, and I'm thinking that I will need to adjust myself back again to a longer prep time so I don't get stuck in some big line.
