Who has a housekeeper?

I know it will vary by region, but what do you pay them and what do they do?  How many times a week/month?

I am on the verge of putting my foot down.  We both work between 50-60 hours a week and when you add in commutes it's impossible (for me) to keep the house clean.  I am sick and tired of wasting my weekends cleaning the house.  Not to mention after a weekend like this one where I was busy both days, nothing got done.  We really, really need it.

Re: Who has a housekeeper?

  • I do! .......

Jeff! Wink  Sorry i had to. But with him being home he is keeping things nice and clean - though he usually does more of that than me anyway.

To truthfully answer your question I don't but my mom and dad have someone come in 1X a week. She won't tell me what she is paying this new person but I know before she was paying about $80/time. But this new person will do all the cleaning, laundry (including putting it away), make the beds, cook if my mom wants her to and run any errands. If she can fit it into her 8 hours there she will do it. The last couple weeks she has gone though the 2 pantrys and gotten rid of all the expired food and organized. She has also organized the linen closets and washed down all the walls and wood trim every where. (She doesn't do those things every week of course)

The last person just cleaned in the general sense of the word, floors, bathrooms, counters nothing major.

Hope that helps... and I'm totally jealous BTW!

  • Like Paige, I don't but my mom does. She pays someone $80.00 every other week. She doesn't need someone to do everything but this way if they keep up with the day to day clutter then the housekeeper does a really good deep clean. She also will bring her in right after a party so that she doesn't feel super overwhelmed this next day.

  • MIL has one for their MA house (she cleans their RI house).

They have a large colonial - 4 beds, 2.5 baths, two large living rooms, big eat in kitchen, dining room, basement.

The cleaning lady does the bathrooms, surfaces in the kitchen, dusts everywhere, mops and vacuums, and will change the sheets too.

They pay her $65-$85 a visit and she comes every other week. The range is based on how many people are living there during the weeks before the house is cleaned. For example, when it is just FIL and MIL it is $65. When the house is full (or like when we lived there) she pays more.

  • I just emailed my mom to find out how much we pay the woman who cleans our place on Sebago.... I really wish we could afford someone ourselves! I'll let you know when she responds.

ETA: $20/ hr for our log cabin at Sebago-- my parents have one at their house in MA too, she gets a lot more but there is a lot more clutter/ she comes over and polishes silver for fun/ makes beds/ lets the dog out...

I'd start with 1x a month.... and see how you like it! Then go from there... if you find you need it more, go to every 3 weeks... or every 2. I doubt you'd need someone there weekly.

  • My MIL cleans other people's houses and charges $20 an hour - she just does basic stuff...Vac, dust, sweep, etc.

  • Funny you posted this today. I was just writting a paper on "women's work" this morning. A significant portion of one of the chapters that I had to read for this paper was dedicated to people who clean other people's homes. It was really interesting. Definitely not a job I would want to do. Pay them well!

  • As for us, DH's OCD means that our house is ridiculously clean. As in, you can't really tell we live there/it looks like a model home (and yes it kind of drives me crazy!). It helps that he's home roughly 15 or so days/month because of his work schedule.

My IL's have a housekeeper that comes in twice a month. I think she pays about $150/month??

Make sure you find someone trustworthy! Get reviews from people in your area who use a housekeeper.

  • Thank you all for your input.  I really appreciate it.

Sounds like it's well worth the money and I live such a basic lifestyle I can really justify this.  Why do I work so hard/such long hours and then feel guilty about relaxing at night or the weekends?!

  • My sister had one and it could vary as to how often you wanted them in.  They had them in once a month and they vacuumed the floors, swept, mopped, dust baseboards, clean sinks, counters, tub, toilet, fan blades, bulbs, that sort of thing.

They didn't do windows or laundry, and they wouldn't clean fake plants or inside cabinets.  She also said they wouldn't clean surfaces with "collections" so as to not break anything. I think it was somewhere around $150 for that in our area.

  • We do.  We got one when I was pregnant because we both worked long hours and just couldn't keep the house clean.  She comes every 2 weeks and we pay $65.  Our house is super small.  We live in a row house in the city thats about 1200 sq feet.  When our cleaning lady comes, its my favorite day.
