What time do you chow down?

What time do you eat your Thankgiving meal?

I was speaking to my sister about Thankgiving dinner plans  (we are celebrating with her) - and she made a comment about how we/she "didn't want to eat too late" and said that we should try to aim for dinner around 3 pm. That strikes me as incredibly early!  She said she doesn't want to eat a huge meal "so late" - such as at 5 pm. Huh?

Is this crazy early to eat a meal? Or is it more standard to eat a large Thanksgiving meal at that time?  We celebrate Thanksgiving with my sister and her family every year, so I am used to eating earlier than DH and I normally would - but this year it just seems like it will be more of a late lunch than a proper dinner!

Of course, DH and I eat our regular dinners rather late due to his teaching schedule (8:30 ish) - and my sister eats dinner with her family early (4:30 ish) because of young children . . . so already our perceptions of timing differs greatly - but the idea of eating at 3 seems a bit extreme to me.

Re: What time do you chow down?

  • My large extended family eats around 1pm on Thanksgiving every year.

DH's family usually eats around 2pm.

I think 3pm seems a little bit late honestly...

I like eating early.  It leaves the rest of the day to relax, loaf, and just hang out :-)

  • I'd prefer a dinner around 6, but I know most people eat earlier so we are planning on eating at 2.

I don't think Thanksgiving follows usual dinner time rules.

  • We eat at 3 or 4pm.  Usually 4 because my aunt is always late.

  • We do Thanksgiving, and it's just us, my mom and DH's parents, so since it's so small, and we know nobody has to be anywhere else, we eat around 4:00.

For Christmas, my grandma has always done dinner at 1:00! Even though nobody has anywhere else to go, it's still at 1:00. Then, she puts sandwitch stuff out at night for a "snack". LOL.

I think 2-3 is pretty typical for holiday meals from talking with our friends.

  • I think 3:00 seems late too!  We usually eat around 2:00, dessert a little later, followed by a "seconds" meal a little later than that! Stick out tongue

  • My grandmother serve thanksgiving "dinner" at 1. DH grandmother also serves it at 1. I think it is so you are in a food coma the rest of the day until 10 o'clock rolls around and then you can have the left overs.

  • We will be eating between 2 and 3--that way we can clean up and be lazy and eat again if we want.

  • We usually eat everyday dinners between 6 and 8 pm...  but thanksgiving is always different.  It's usually between 12 noon and 3 pm.  Appetizers for breakfast, a big turkey meal, then leftovers into the evening followed by Brandy Alexanders at night.  Mmmm.

  • We're eating at 2. We usually get to my mom's house about 1, then eat and hang out for a few hours.

  • It depends on who we're with, but usually in the early afternoon.  We're eating at 1:30 this year at H's aunts.

  • We normally eat dinners around 7-8:30ish but I agree that holidays are a different time frame all together. We are eating "dinner" at DH's aunt's at 1:30-2ish (whenever his grandparents get there). Then we are going to my brother's house for dinner with my family at 4:30, which is a lot later than the rest of the family wanted to do but we have the prior dinner to go to.

  • I've always eaten Thanksgiving dinner for lunch.... around noon growing up (farmer time) and around 2 when it came to going elsewhere (like my in-laws').
  • I guess 2-3 is pretty standard. Wow. I thought things would trend more toward 4 or 5!

We are also going to my Aunt's on Friday for a turkey dinner with my dad's side of the family (40ish people) and that will be at 6. My poor tummy is going to be so confused by all the time fluctuations!

  • We usually do Thanksgiving around lunch time and then reheat leftovers for dinner!

  • This makes me feel better about my family. I always thought it was odd to eat Thanksgiving dinner at 3:00. That's usually when my dad insists on eating.

  • If we're with my family, about 2 pm or so.

If we're with DH's family, we do appetizers like chicken wings, chips & dip, mini corn dogs, cheese & meat trays, etc, at about 12 or 1 and then dinner around 6 or 7.

    I prefer DH's family's take on Thanksgiving.

  • My family usually eats the meal around 2-3 pm if my parents are hosting.  We're having an evening meal this year at my brother's because Big D and I will be the late arrivals on Thursday.  But it's more common for us to have a mid-day meal.  Most people in my family like to drive earlier in the day.  We always walk after the meal too, so that gives us just enough daylight to do it.
  • We're eating at 5pm, but will go over at 4:30.  My girl will be napping in the afternoon so I have no idea if she wasn't a napper when we'd eat?

The entire holiday is sad to me because I am incapable of "overeating" and having the happy gorge fest.  The food is also just very "OK' to me.

I love the family and thankfulness side of the holiday though. :)

  • We ALWAYS eat early around the holidays - I think tomorrow it'll be around 2 or 3.  I don't know why that is - I think maybe it's because no one eats a big breakfast in anticipation of the huge meal.  So by 2 or 3 everyone's starving!
