What time do you eat your Thankgiving meal?
I was speaking to my sister about Thankgiving dinner plans (we are celebrating with her) - and she made a comment about how we/she "didn't want to eat too late" and said that we should try to aim for dinner around 3 pm. That strikes me as incredibly early! She said she doesn't want to eat a huge meal "so late" - such as at 5 pm. ![]()
Is this crazy early to eat a meal? Or is it more standard to eat a large Thanksgiving meal at that time? We celebrate Thanksgiving with my sister and her family every year, so I am used to eating earlier than DH and I normally would - but this year it just seems like it will be more of a late lunch than a proper dinner!
Of course, DH and I eat our regular dinners rather late due to his teaching schedule (8:30 ish) - and my sister eats dinner with her family early (4:30 ish) because of young children . . . so already our perceptions of timing differs greatly - but the idea of eating at 3 seems a bit extreme to me.
Re: What time do you chow down?
My large extended family eats around 1pm on Thanksgiving every year.
DH's family usually eats around 2pm.
I think 3pm seems a little bit late honestly...
I like eating early. It leaves the rest of the day to relax, loaf, and just hang out :-)
I'd prefer a dinner around 6, but I know most people eat earlier so we are planning on eating at 2.
I don't think Thanksgiving follows usual dinner time rules.
Judging
We eat at 3 or 4pm. Usually 4 because my aunt is always late.
my read shelf:
We do Thanksgiving, and it's just us, my mom and DH's parents, so since it's so small, and we know nobody has to be anywhere else, we eat around 4:00.
For Christmas, my grandma has always done dinner at 1:00! Even though nobody has anywhere else to go, it's still at 1:00. Then, she puts sandwitch stuff out at night for a "snack". LOL.
I think 2-3 is pretty typical for holiday meals from talking with our friends.
I think 3:00 seems late too! We usually eat around 2:00, dessert a little later, followed by a "seconds" meal a little later than that!

We normally eat dinners around 7-8:30ish but I agree that holidays are a different time frame all together. We are eating "dinner" at DH's aunt's at 1:30-2ish (whenever his grandparents get there). Then we are going to my brother's house for dinner with my family at 4:30, which is a lot later than the rest of the family wanted to do but we have the prior dinner to go to.
I guess 2-3 is pretty standard. Wow. I thought things would trend more toward 4 or 5!
We are also going to my Aunt's on Friday for a turkey dinner with my dad's side of the family (40ish people) and that will be at 6. My poor tummy is going to be so confused by all the time fluctuations!
We usually do Thanksgiving around lunch time and then reheat leftovers for dinner!
If we're with my family, about 2 pm or so.
If we're with DH's family, we do appetizers like chicken wings, chips & dip, mini corn dogs, cheese & meat trays, etc, at about 12 or 1 and then dinner around 6 or 7.
I prefer DH's family's take on Thanksgiving.
We're eating at 5pm, but will go over at 4:30. My girl will be napping in the afternoon so I have no idea if she wasn't a napper when we'd eat?
The entire holiday is sad to me because I am incapable of "overeating" and having the happy gorge fest. The food is also just very "OK' to me.
I love the family and thankfulness side of the holiday though.
