I think I'm starting a tradition, and I need ideas
My dad LOVES marzipan. About a year ago, I learned how to make it, and last Christmas I gave him a little box of it. I thought making it into fruit shapes was not terribly exciting, so I made him little tools with the stuff. There was a hammer, saw, etc.
I think I want to make him marzipan every year for Christmas.
What fun shapes should I make? I'm not very crafty, so simple is better. Funny would be awesome.

tell us more about your dad... likes, hobbies, etc.
first thing that came to mind was beach stuff (fish, starfish, seashells...) don't know why. and it's not funny
My dad loves to fly fish (ooo! fishies!), and he does a lot of home improvement (hence the tools from last year). He was in the Navy for 20 years, flying E2s -- the planes with the giant saucer on top. He is also an excellent cook.
His nickname is Darth, as in Vadar. But I tend to feel that the whole Star Wars thing is a bit overdone in my family, so I stay away from it.
This site has some pretty cool molds. If you are looking to do this every year, it would be a good investment!

I love marizpan.
Share how you do it please (or you can send me some, I'm a good guinea pig).
I think little fishies would be awfully cute.
I love marzipan too!
I like the fish idea also, but then I like that sort of thing in general. It kinda comes with having a fish tank in the living room.

i have the real recipe at home, but it's basically a ton of blanched almonds, powdered sugar and egg white, whizzed up in the food processor. that makes almond paste. once you have that, you add more stuff to it (more powdered sugar, and something else), and whiz it up some more.
i may put it on my blog when i make them. but i don't want to ruin the surprise, because i'm not sure how much my dad reads my blog.
i think fishies have won. if i could find a mini fishing basket, that would be super awesome.
(trots off to googly search)
maybe planes next year?
ETA: boats one year?
Love it!
