TV over fireplace: yay or nay?

What say Aug '09 on this?

Part of our living room redo includes a new gas fireplace to replace the old fugly stove style gas thingy.

Now, the much debated question of the moment is whether or not we should put the TV over the fireplace.

The way I see it, we've got 3 options.

1) Fireplace built into the corner with a nice mantel to put pretty things on, maybe hang some art or a mirror above, TV on a separate stand to the left, couch on the wall opposite the TV.

2) Fireplace built into the corner with a nice mantel and the TV mounted over it, couch on the same wall as option 1 (so viewing TV at an angle).

3) Fireplace in the centre of the wall that's got the awesome wallpaper in the picture above, TV above it, couch on the opposite wall (essentially same couch location in all options).

I'm of the opinion that option 1 is far superior.  I'm not a huge fan of TVs over fireplaces.  Maybe if the room was a lot bigger and the couch was a lot further away (I'd say the room is about 12-13 ft wide?) it might be ok, but I think that it would just be annoying and uncomfortable to watch TV for extended periods with it up there.  Derek wants the TV over the fireplace.

What do you guys think?  I'm willing to be overruled if an option other than the one I want really is better, but I've yet to be convinced.  Feel free to suggest other options too!

Re: TV over fireplace: yay or nay?

  • depends on the height of the mantel and the size of the tv....  I really dislike when they are really high up.... and also when they tv is either too big or too small for the space hung...

  • I vote option 1.

  • I was adamant that our TV did not go over the fireplace. I don't like looking up when watching TV. I don't decorate the mantel for holidays or anything, but I like to have nice artwork hung above it and my TV not seem like it's on display.

  • I definitely prefer option 1. I'm not a huge fan of hanging a TV over the fireplace though.
  • #1. Maybe #3 if the fireplace was short enough, but I'm also not a fan of TVs over fireplaces in general.

  • I hear you there Erinn.

It's a 46" LCD, soooo, 42-ish inches wide.  The smallest the wall could be if we built it into the corner is 57.5 inches, so, minimum 7-8 inches clearance on either side.

Height wise, well, that's the other question.  I think I want the same amount of material showing on all sides of the fireplace, so it would likely be 6-10 inches off the ground, then 35 inches for the first place, then another 6-10 inches to the mantel, then a few inches before the TV, sooo, around 4 feet to the mantel, whatever mantel height (3-6 inches?) then TV.

  • I vote for number 1.

1.I'm not a fan of how high tv's are when they are above a fireplace.

    2. It also makes your tv/fireplace your sole focal point in the room. By having your tv and your fire place separated you are able to have two focal points in the room. So if you have friends over and aren't watching tv it won't look like you are worshiping the black empty screen.

    3. I feel that when tv's are hung on the wall instead of a media console they make your room squish up towards the wall. Or your sofa is placed so far back in the room if you have a larger tv what's the point. Kind of like sitting in the back row of a movie theater. You don't really get to enjoy it half as much as if you sit in the middle.

  • Ah, I'm so glad you guys are all on my side!

  • option 1 for sure. aside from personal preference, optimum viewing = eye level with the middle of the screen when seated.

  • We decided to go with a large painting above the fireplace to keep it as a formal sitting area and I am very happy with it. I will snap a photo tonight if you want.

ETA-We were originally going to put a TV up, even bought one. Now it is in the basement/future man cave.

I work for an A/V integration company, and it's a field standard that monitors be placed at eye level with the center of the screen. Certain exceptions apply, like board rooms, or situations where people will view any monitors standing up, from a distance, etc.  And don't let him talk you in to tilt mounts either. Just as bad.

Raynes if he argues you can say you know someone who is a designer for a living and she agrees with you. Stick out tongue

  • I like option 1 as well.

FWIW, we have our TV above the fireplace since the layout of the room didn't allow any other options (we're in a rental).  Our main problem with it ... it's too high and we do have to look up at it, so it's not the most comfortable.  Yeah, we got the tilt mount too, and it doesn't really help too much.

LOL yes, even in the back of a truck, sreihing manages to place her TV screens at eye level from seated position. These chicks know their stuff! :)

I was actually going to post thats how I prefer it in my "height/size ratio" comment above...but thats bc that's how Pete swears its best (now I know from mizprofeshsreihing here).... but we also have a low entertainment console... I wouldnt mind it being a few inches higher, bc it shakes when the dogs run around like nuts....

  • totally late as usual, but I thought I'd throw my two cents in here too. I vote for number one. I'm anti-TV-over-fireplace any day, especially if it's in a corner of the room like that. booyah Derek!

  • Ditto Mandee on being late.  I agree with everyone else.  We have our fireplace directly across from our couch with our bar in a nook to the right and our tv in a nook to the left.  It works perfectly with our space.  It's all about finding the right configuration to be able to watch in a position that doesn't stress your body.  Who wants to watch tv while gazing up?  You might as well go to a planetarium.

Perfect.  Oh, and thanks for the info too! ;)

And thanks you too eva.  I'll use that ammo for sure.  And may pick your brain later too, as we're in the process of coming up with a kitchen design...

  • ringy - if you're going to do, you better do it right! actually, it was slightly higher than I'd like, but it isn't a huge deal since most people's vision was blurred/spinning by gametime anyway :)

and Erinn - I think I'm going to put mizprofeshsreihing on my business cards

  • I had this battle with Josh, too...  I vote number 1, and I won with the "eye level" tactic, but my real thing was that I didn't want the fireplace to look like an altar to the TV.
