We got the dog!
I asked last week about rescues, and how they typically work, and I'm happy to say we now have the dog we wanted to meet in our home for a trial week or two. She's so sweet, and so well-behaved, though, that I really doubt she's going anywhere. 
Thanks for the help and advice!
We renamed her (she was a stray, so it doesn't matter much) Winnie Cooper. It just fits her.

What kind of dog do your parents have? The rescue thinks Winnie is a schnauzer poodle mix. I tend to believe it. She doesn't shed much, and her face definitely looks like a miniature schnauzer.
