I had my doctors appointment today with a new doctor. She recommended I stop taking regular birth control pills due to my migrain Aura's. I guess there is a correlation b/w those and strokes when taking a BC pill. She asked me to try the "mini-pill" or progesterone only pill.
She told me they are not quite as effective as regular BC, and need to be taken at the exact same time every day.
I was curious if anyone here has taken them, and what side effects they have experienced. Any likes/dislikes compared to other BC?
TIA:)
Re: Migrains and mini-pills
I stopped taking BCPs for this reason. Instead of going on another pill, I've elected to learn how to chart and use the FAM method. If you're interested, you can check out the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility.
I don't feel like (as a woman) the birth control should be something that affects my body chemistry. Currently, we're using condoms until i can get the hang of the FAM method.

This except my periods are not very regular so I don't think we'll ever be able to go without condoms until we're TTC.
i did not switch to the mini pill, but i did stop BCP to see if it helped my migraines. it did not, at all, not in the tiniest, most relieving bit. none. i only say this to give you a heads up that that *may* be the cause, and for many women it *is* the cause, but it is not the case for *all* migraines.
The mini-pill or progesterone only pills need to be taken at the same time every day. For that reason, they aren't as effective as combo pills.
Something you might consider is the Implanon. www.implanon.com for more information. It is like the old Norplant. It is a silicone rod that is placed just under the skin on the inside of your upper arm. It is impregnated with progesterone only. It can remain in your arm for up to 3 years. Your fertility returns as soon as it is removed- no waiting period like Depo. It is more effective than the mini-pills. Talk to your doctor to see if it is right for you. To make insertion (it is just like getting a shot) and removal more easy- use a doctor that routinely uses this form of contraception.
Side effects are very individual to the person since hormonal contraception affects everyone differently. Side effects are similar to other forms: weight gain/loss, acne, mood changes, etc.
I was switched to low dose pills because of my headaches. The switch is not always because the pills are causing your headaches but because the pill puts you at increased risk of stroke and so do the headaches so the 2 together are not good. At least that was the case with me.
I had major side effect issues and hated the first 2 low dose pills I was on. Third time was a charm. Absolutely no problems or side effects with this one.
HA! that is the entire point of the book, as well as the FAM method. if you are aware of your body and body temps, you will know when you ovulate so you know when to use protection or not have sex. you're not the only one to have irregular cycles. in fact, you're in the majority. hence learning the FAM method. also, if you don't want to learn those, you could purchase OPK's and use them daily. when you get positive OPK's, you know ovulation is around the corner and to use protection.
Thanks for all the info!
I got migraines before I began taking BCP. The doctor was concerned that since my migraines have aura's as well, it increases my likely hood of having a stroke. Thats why she wants me to not use a combo BCP anymore.
I think I will try the minipill and see how it goes compared to other methods:) Thanks!
This is exactly why I went off BCP a month ago. My auras were getting worse, so my doctor was concerned. Which is ironic, because the doctors originally put me on BCP (when I was 16) to try and help control my migraines. I suppose my body is a little different now, 9 years later though.
FWIW, I filled the mini pill prescription, then realized I couldn't skip the placebo, so I didn't bother taking them. My entire mood has changed (as has the sex drive! yay!) since being off BCP.
Good luck with your migraines.
