Does anyone seriously participate and treat it as a sport? Lets hear your stories and great deals that you've gotten in the past.
Re: Black Friday.....
I don't wake up early for much... so, I could almost say that I've never had any interest... and, almost never participated...
...except...
...one year...
... they started it at midnight!!! My favorite hour! It was a big mall with lots of people waiting at the main entrances and around Macy's and Nordstrom. DH and I found a side entrance. We got right up to the door. By 11:50 our side entrance was equally as packed. When they opened the doors, H had to be first. Everyone was running. It was hysterical. We didn't even have anything in mind. People were serious... especially Game Stop (don't know the name... not a gamer). We were the first people in the Disney Store. I guess it wasn't on the priority list for serious shoppers. We bought a lot of stuff for DD and friends. When we left Disney, everything was insanely packed and LOUD. People were on each others shoulders yelling to their friends. I grew up in New Orleans, so consider myself good with crowds (Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest and ongoing crowded celebrations). However, it was way too much chaos. It was fun to do once... but, not something I would put on my calendar to repeat.
Newlyweds since 2007
thoperopesope - where's your answer, lady?
Newlyweds since 2007
We take part in it every year to purchase the electronics we've been drooling over during the previous year. I wouldn't say I treat it as a sport but two years ago I raced a man to the last 52 inch tv that DH wanted so badly (sold for $1500? but purchased it for $800). I touched it first, so obviously I won it, and then threw it to the ground to lay on it until DH got inside from parking the car. After waiting in line for over an hour to check out our one item, we had to disassemble it in the parking lot because it wouldn't fit in the car. Guess we were too involved in creating take down strategies that we didn't think of how we'd get it home.
haha beth!
I have never participated in black friday... I usually just stay far far away from any shopping places!
I'm actually quite bummed because being in Germany, I'm missing out on Black Friday - well except for online but it's not the same. I like to see things in person and try things on (if they are for me).
DH and I generally participate in the Black Friday madness. One year we got up at 2 a.m. to get to a mall 3 hours away in time for their 5:30 am opening. We thought this mall, being a bigger and better mall, would be awesome for Black Friday. We were wrong - what a waste!
The best experience I had was the year my sister flew from Hawaii to help me drive/move from California to Texas. We stopped in some city in California to get a pedicure on Black Friday and randomly decided to brave the crowds. It was a lot of fun shopping with my sister, no shopping list or agenda on our minds.
Love this!! I can just picture you laying on it on the ground. So funny! And then having to disassemble it for the car!
As for me, I usually don't participate in Black Friday, and probably won't again for a while because MH was traumatized the one time we did it in 08.
We went to a big outlet mall around here that opens at midnight - we got there around 10 pm thinking that would be fine, but boy were we wrong! The people who really wanted to get to the desirable stores were in line by at least 6. It didn't take us long to get there, but from the freeway to the mall (usually less than 5 minutes), it took more than 45 minutes with all the cars flooding the lot.
We couldn't find a parking spot for the life of us, and as we were waiting the 45 minutes to get to the parking lot, we saw people who had parked at far away temporary lots and were walking to the mall. DH was not going to do that (he's not really into walking unfortunately), so he said he would drop me off and circle around until I was done/he found a spot.
Man the line for the Coach factory store was so long it was pointless to get into it. I didn't see a lot of grabbing and shoving anywhere though. So while the DH (darling husband!! he deserves an upgrade from dear) was driving around, I hit up Gap, J Crew, Banana, Ann Taylor, Kate Spade, BCBG and Max Studio (both to look for my BM dresses), and goodness knows where else.
Turns out, for about 1 hour 45 min while he was driving around (never found a parking spot), he started having to pee really bad!! And I was out for 2 hours!!! And the worst thing - I didn't find ANYTHING I liked, so I came back to the car empty-handed!! And the sweet thing did not call me and tell me let's go, I have to pee!!
He's loopy, he's just too sweet. So yeah, he's traumatized.
I love reading these stories! Definitely a great way to start my morning
It's hard to experience it in Japan, too. I've always wanted to experience it as a shopper... I worked at Sears for 5 years before moving and always had to work that crazy day.
LOL
I did it one year also....was at the mall at 4am with a friend and her mother (they do it every year). Queen Kaahumanu Mall was giving away a $500 gift card. We were standing in line and the lady in front of us let her friend cut, we didn't see the big deal until we got our gift bags and she got the $500 gift card, she said she was going to share it with us for letting her cut in front of us, but that didn't happen. It was very crazy and I never did it again. My husband and I are thinking about checking things out this year, probably not going to do the early morning thing, but I think we might go to costco and take advantage of getting family gifts, you know the cookies, coffee and candies stuff...they have some really good deals going on for some local favorites that we haven't seen in a long time. Chocolate covered mochi crunch and the tamoe rice candy is on my list
LOL, growing up, my family did Black Friday more consistently than we had turkey, that's for sure! They get up around 4am every year and try to snag all the free-after-rebate items
plus whatever else good deals they want. I'm usually the only one that sleeps in until 9am+ and then meet up with them there (they grab extras for me so I get the goods without the early waking =P).
But after I got married, I haven't gone to one yet. Last yr, when I was pg and puking and bedridden, my parents ended up calling me while they were shopping and asking if I wanted them to pick up some stuff for me, which I agreed to. They dropped it off at my house and I sent in the forms & UPCs for the rebates
late to the party as usual, but i want to post anyway
we usually go to a handful of stores at about 8 am and finish by noon. i find the shoppers come in waves, and there's usually nothing that i MUST have. i usually pick not-so-crazy stores, like target and kohls.
MH goes to best buy though when it opens at 5. i usually am asleep while he goes.
this year we got some really good deals on toys. i usually get clothes as gifts, but MH said he didn't want to be the "clothes" auntie/uncle couple, so i got toys instead...
everything under $10!!!
hawaii 10.2008 plan ;P married bio ???
