Is your husband thoughtful about Christmas present(s)?

I don't think James has any idea what I want for Christmas.  He was thoughtful the first year we were together - we've always been on a tight budget, and what he got me the first year was very thoughtful but not expensive.

(for those of you who remember YA books from the 80s and 90s, I loved this series called Couples, and he found some on ebay that I didn't have).

I can't remember for the life of me what he got me in 2008.  2009 was the Vegas trip.  We want to keep in the tradition of getting thoughtful but inexpensive gifts for each other...  probably limit it to $50 total.

He is so low maintenance that I really don't know what he wants for Christmas (so I guess I shouldn't be complaining that he doesn't know what I want!).  I think I'm going to get him a sweater or some kind of jacket.  He really needs one.

I really want to be surprised at his thoughtfulness come Christmas day, but I'm thinking of giving him a list of possible things to get.  Is that lame?

How about you?  How are you guys letting each other know (or not) what you want for Christmas?

And have you ever been disappointed in what he's gotten you?

(sorry for the xmas talk so early in the year, before thanksgiving, but i'm in the mood earlier this year!)

Re: Is your husband thoughtful about Christmas present(s)?

  • I don't think it's too early to talk about Christmas :) I started putting up my decorations yesterday, I got so excited I couldn't wait any longer :)  The hubs is usually pretty good at getting me what I want or would like.  There was one year in particular that he totally got an F in gift giving.  I got a bunch of odds and end stuff, candy....really cheapy made jewelry that looked like a  5 year old made.  I got over it though, we laugh at it now.  Since then we decided that we would buy gifts that we both would enjoy, so we got ourselves a wii last year the year before that we bought a 42in TV, this year not sure what we are going to get.  We've spent so much money on our home for new furniture.  I think we are just going to concentrate on getting gifts for family and friends this year.
  • DH isn't the best at gift giving at all. Either he gets me something and then later says it was a present for blah, blah, blah or he gets me nothing. The last time he did that $h!t hit the fan. I get that we're budgeting but at least get me a card. After a firm talking to last year I hope he gets the point this year. I am always the one to go above and beyond with his gifts (I love gift giving) so this year I am going to scale back.

  • i'm actually kind of nervous about this! I would hate for him to think I am disappointed in what he got me, but then again I want to be surprised and excited about whatever he chooses. He is okay at gift giving, but usually needs hints and our budget is restricted.

We decided to just do stockings this year (so I guess that means small things that will fit in there). Like you Jen, my DH is so hard to shop for! He likes practical stuff. I will probably get him some boxers and who knows what else!

Last year he got me pearl earrings because I was really bummed that my last pair broke (from Maui Pearl Divers). Besides my wedding ring and e-ring, the jewelry he's given me (earrings) have been on the less-expensive end. I would LOVE some special jewelry but I don't know how to hint that and I doubt he would buy it! I really hope he comes up with something thoughtful though.

  • DH is hard to buy for as well because, generally, if he wants it, he'll go and get it.  If he doesn't want it or need it that bad, then he won't get it which leaves me with a list of things that he never really wanted all that much to begin with.  As for buying me gifts, DH does a pretty good job but he also gets me some random stuff that leaves me wondering where he got his ideas from.

DH always complains about how hard it is to find me presents so over the past few months I have created a wishlist online.  I add website links or ideas on there (and it helps DH because even if I mention I want an item, he completely forgets about it).  Every so often I'll go on there and review the list, either deleting items I already got or no longer want.  It's kind of fun because I remind myself of things that I even forgot I wanted.  Smile

  • Dh always looks at my amazon list, but rarely buys off of it.  He's SO good at getting me thoughtful presents, so good that I feel bad b/c I never know what he wants!

I'm so in the mood early this year too, I don't know why.

  • let's just say he tries...

we've been getting each other gifts for about 13 years now, so i'm rather eh about the whole situation. but not in a bad way.

we make each other lists of items and  then go from there. i would rather end up up with somethign useful than getting stressed out over the whole deal.

even though we have our lists for each other, the fun part for me is to see how many items i can get off his list and still manage to stay within budget. i bargain shop like crazy =)
