I posted awhile ago about how I signed up for a 5k and had about two months before the race. You guys were so encouraging that I thought I should update you all on how it went!
Sadly, I did not run the whole thing.
The C25K program was working great until week 6 or 7. It's the week where you worked up to running 8 minutes in a row (5 min. walk, then run 8 min. again) and then the next day you have to run for 20 minutes straight! This was way too much for me. It just felt unreasonable to all of a sudden increase the run time by 12 minutes in one shot. I don't know, maybe I should find a Bed 2 5k program rather than Couch 2 5k. ![]()
Even though I wasn't able to run the whole thing in under 30 minutes - my original goal - I still had a lot of fun. I walked/ran it in about 41 minutes. I feel pretty crappy about the time, but it was still a good first experience. The atmosphere of the race was fun and I'm hoping that with some training I can do one again in the spring and do better. DH was great, he did his 5k in 26 minutes. I'm so proud of him!
Oh, the best thing about this race was all of the dogs! The 5k was in support of a local pet rescue/spay & neuter program, so a lot of runners brought their dogs to run with. The race also had a 1 mile fun walk, but a lot of people took their dogs on the 5k! DH was beat by a couple of dogs too, lol.
Anyway, I'm hoping that with a little more time for training, tweaking the program a bit, and trying harder to lose some weight, I'll be able to run the whole thing next time. It was a lot of fun and very inspiring just to be there with runners of all ages and abilities.
Thanks for the support!
Re: 5k update - kinda long :)
You did great, Katie! Don't be so hard on yourself for your first 5k and most importantly you had fun and enjoyed the race atmosphere!
Thanks again ladies! I'm glad to have done it, so hopefully the next time will be even better.
Natalie - You are quite the runner, and doing the Turkey Trot right after the biggest pig-out of the year is impressive. Have fun!
Mary - I've started training again this week, so I can be your long distance C25k buddy.
Samantha - I think we will have to call you RoadRunner after all of these races you have coming up! And a mini-marathon for your 30th is a fabulous idea, I'm sure you'll rock the pavement!
Quite the runner, me? You're crazy hehe! I'm more of an elliptical-er who gets really, really sore when I run on the pavement
Thankfully the Turkey Trot isn't until Saturday, if it was Friday I'd probably waddle like a turkey to the finish line!
Keep up the great work, Katie, with your training! You should come up to Chicago in March for the Shamrock Shuffle!
Congrats on your first 5k, Katie! No matter what the time, it's a great accomplishment finishing it! And I think we should plan a GTG for the Shamrock Shuffle.
I'd so like to run it and I'm hoping it will keep me training on the boring treadmill this winter!
Yes, let's do it! Even though it was chilly and drizzly last year I had a lot of fun!
