Spray tan?

Has anybody ever gotten one? I got a month-to-month membership a week ago so I can tan before Mexico the first week of January (I tan VERY slowly, and will burn like crazy down there if I don't build up a base tan first). The tanning salon is great, one of the best in the area, and apparently does really good spray tans. They are doing $5 spray tans this month for members, and I'm really tempted to get one this afternoon. I already shaved and exfoliated, but don't know for sure if I'm going to get it.

Are the results usually pretty natural looking? I don't want to be orange or blotchy. Any tips? I read that I can't wear deodorant?!

Re: Spray tan?

  • Oooooooh Saaaaaaaam.... she knows all about spray tans!
  • We got spray tans for our wedding. It was a bit dark (I think I got level 2, and chris got level 1 - I'm darker to begin with) the first day, but by the wedding 3 days later it was perfect. it lasted a week. There weren't any issues with deoderant etc, just be sure you're dry before you put on clothes. And clean your hands well!

Also, the whole base-tan thing is crap. You'll still burn in the same amount of time with or without a tan to start with, you'll just tan darker if you start tan. Embrace the pale & wear good sunblock & reapply. I have a 4 in scar from melanoma (likely a result of my two 6 mo or so stints tanning in my early 20s) if you need a push away from the beds Big Smile

  • I've had a spray tan, but it was at a dermatologist office where a girl actually airbrushed me. It was wonderful!!

I'm tempted to go to a regular salon one, but I don't know if it would be the same or not? Let me know how it goes! I've heard they have come a long way since the old Mystic Tan from 10 or so years ago, and that it looks much more natural now.

That makes sense...I think I've just been in denial Stick out tongue

I know tanning is such a risk, so I don't go very often. I may just have to start spray tanning before big events. I just get SO pale in the winter that the lightest shade of powder make up is almost too dark, and then my very dark cirles (that are always present) look even worse. I pretty much walk around looking like a ghost all winter, and then I get self concious.

I have this same problem -- I have extremely fair skin! I use a self-tanning foam that is designed for gradual color. I think Loreal makes it. I use it 3 times a week on my face, arms, neck and chest to give me just enough color to not look like the walking dead. I use it on my entire body 1-2 times a week, just so the color difference isn't huge. I've never had any issues with being streaky or blotchy (except for where I forgot to wash it off the back of my hands).

I just have to third this.... I have a pretty nice 3 inch scar on my back, which I am sure is a result from my HS and early college tanning days. They do make sunblock with self tanners that I used this summer, which gave me the darker look without the burn that I am used to!

  • I had a spray tan done for my wedding.  I loved it.  The first trial run was a tad too tan, so for the actual wedding she mixed it with a lighter one.  The only issue was that it takes a bit for it to dry completely.  It's more tacky....

I would love to get another though...the color lasted on me for almost 3 weeks...without using moisturizer...

  • As a frequent spray tanner ( I do the airbrush where a girl comes to my house) I will tell you it is awesome, and great for a quick color boost. I entertained the ladies on Saturday w/ my stories of it, and I want to have a spray tanning party:)

BUT it is not a base tan (it will start to fade as the days go by) You will still burn, and need sun block. Especially if you are fair skinned and going to Mexico where the sun is very strong.

Get a spray tan if you want to look fab in your bathing suit, cute summer dresses, not if you want a base or whatever it won't work..

I have to disagree with this.  DH and I went to Mexico a few years ago and I only did sunblock.  I went through 2  full sized non-expired bottles in 3 days and came home looking like leather and could barely move.

For the month before the wedding I "tanned" twice a week in the lowest level of beds to build up a base.  That time we went to Mexico for 8 days.  I didn't even go through 1 bottle of the same sunscreen and did not tan or burn while I was there.

ETA: I am another that belongs to the pastey group!

  • I also used to frequent the tanning bed. I stopped a few years ago but once I read this I knew I would never step foot into a tanning bed place again: "A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30."

So I started getting spray tans for events. I went to a place that a person air brushes it on. I looks so natural. I did it before my b-pics and it looked great! My say yes to the spray tan!
