VENT - Recommend your eye doctor

I have a great eye doctor, but their office stinks and I'm thinking it's time to get a new doc - preferrably one that runs his/her office well.

I have a peev with docs that run more than 10-15 minutes behind on a regular basis (barring an emergency). Mine called me to schedule a routine exam a few weeks ago - and on that day I had a migraine. I figured that getting my eyes dilated while I was already light sensitive was a BAD idea and called to reschedule - they didn't even have my appt on the books! Whoever made the appt with me on the phone had spaced on getting it in the computer.

Then yesterday - the rescheduled appt - which was for 4:15, I show up on time and there's one other patient waiting - who had a 3:45 appt and who they did not call in to go back to see the doc until 4:45!! At that point the receptionist tells me that the Dr is running about 30 minutes behind. I point out to her that the patient he just called in had a 3:45 appt and that, it being 4:45 now, we were at the "30 minutes late" mark already for mine. To which she made some lame excuse about him spending extra time with his earlier patients. She did tell me the average appt takes 1.5-2 hours. So I'm thinking - great, if I'm in @ 5pm, then I'm not out of here until 6:30-7pm - in Kenwood with dilated eyes. H & I had plans for 7:30 downtown and still needed to eat something before then.

At 5:00pm I told her I was leaving and would call to reschedule, and that the office should have called me earlier if she knew he was running behind just after lunch. If I called to say I was running 45 minutes to an hour late for an appt, they would request that I reschedule and they should have the same respect for their patient's time.

You'd think there'd be some modicum of time-management that would be inherently fed into the type-A personality required to get through medical school. GRRRR.

  • I don't have a rec because I'm going to a new Dr. soon myself, but my husband likes her so we'll see!

If they say the average appointment takes 1.5-2 hours then why were you scheduled 30 minutes after the previous appointment?  I don't get it.

    Good luck!

If it's a good Dr, I don't care. I'll drive an hour in any direction if I like the physician. I'm pretty healthy, so it's not like I'm driving up there every week.

I love my eye dr.  He is part of wing eye care.  I go to the one in Liberty Twp.  The office staff are nice for the most part as well.  Some are a little pushing sales wise but not too terrible.

  • A friend of mine works for Dr Sands in the UC Medical Arts Building, she said he is pretty good. I dont have an eye Dr so this is my only recommendation.
  • I've been seeing Dr. Albert Drees w/ Wing Eyecare in Montgomery since I was just out of high school.  I love that place!  They are well run, efficient, and very personable.  I don't remember ever having to wait more than a few minutes when I was there for my appointment.  I actually just went a few months ago b/c I was having some major issues w/ my eyes, and I called on Saturday morning and got an appointment for later that afternoon.  I got there, checked in, sat down to start to read a magazine and I barely had time to flip it open before they called me back.  They do a very thorough exam, too, which was important to me.  I hate feeling like I'm inconveniencing a doctor and I never feel that way w/ them.  HTH!

  • What are they doing in an eye appt. that takes 1.5-2 hours?? My regular exam (I wear contacts) is 25-30 minutes, tops. I've never had an issue with waiting at the eye dr., but then I go to the one at my neighborhood Costco, and he's a one-man operation. I can't say that I love him to the point of recommending you to drive up to Mason just to see him, but he's definitely good with time management!

Now my regular doctor (GP) is ALWAYS behind--I think he's just overbooked. Even when I'm in there at 9 a.m. he's running behind. So for those appts. I always plan a minimum of 3 hours.
