Ok, so I'm running the turkey trot tomorrow AM at 8:30. I don't have any cold weather gear and from the weather report, it's going to be about 37 F at the race start time and might warm up to 43 F by the time I'm done.
Most of my workout gear is for summer or gym - not outside. I don't want to go buy a ton of stuff for just one run. Ugh. I have long pants that are breathable but are thicker - more yoga-ish (lululemon). All my tops are pretty lightweight tees and I do have a very light athletic jacket that has no lining. And I was thinking of putting on a bandanna to cover my head and ears.
Of course, I could just throw on any old long sleeve tee that I have and go in that, but I know kfishie recommended not to wear anything I haven't worn before, so I'm not sure if digging into my 'non workout wear' would be the best thing to do.
Ideas?
Re: Runners come in! Running in the cold. Help!
HAH!! Okay, just because it is you and it is cold, here is my advice:
Go to Target or Kohls today and purchase some wicking pants and a long sleeve top (or fleece). Wear it around the house tonight. Wash it if you can. Wear your usual sports bra and top. Layers are key! Ugh, if only I was headed your way tonight I would loan you the perfect stuff!
I've ran in the pants before, so I feel pretty good there.
I just need tops! I think I will hit up target/kohl's and see if I can find something cheap for the top.
THANKS!
(and see? I always have a certain kfishie in my head. lol!)
I agree with kfishie about the layers. Find something that you don't mind tossing along the road if you get warm. I like to wear a tank top, log sleeve shirt and then a light fleece or something I know I won't mind getting rid of. Also maybe pick up some cheap gloves at target and maybe a headband. My ears are always to coldest when I run.
Have a great race. I was going to do the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot but now we are in charge of cooking dinner. Good luck!
I just wanted to commiserate (as I agree with PP's and don't really have anything to add). It's supposed to be 18* at the start of my turkey trot tomorrow. AHHH!!! (I was fortunately prepared and purchased Under Armour tights, a wicking hat and gloves from Target, etc...but yeah, I still don't think I'm truly *prepared* for it, yikes!).
I got my wicking gloves at Target for $12, but I know a lot of H&F ladies just buy $2 gloves for cold races, with the intent to ditch them along the way if it gets too warm.
GL, have fun!!
Yes, yes, yes. Layers is key.
Today I was out in the elements and I had 3 layers on-tank top, moisture wicking long sleeved top (which I got from Target) and a t-shirt over that.
I also wore a headband that kept my ears warm and gloves. You can get some cheap headband and gloves @ Target.
Also, I were running socks that are a little thicker than my normal ones to keep my feet warm.
The recommendation is to dress 10 degrees warmer than the temp. So if it is going to be 38, dress as if it is 48. I always get hot when I run so I tend not to "bulk" up b/c I will just overheat.
Good luck!!!
On gloves:
You can either buy running gloves (Target sells them) or just buy the inexpensive gloves (2 pairs in a multitude of colors for $1.50 at Target in the scarves and purse section).
On Hats:
I am a fan of ear bands because I do not like to have cold ears. For me, I have both wicking hats/ear bands, fleece ones, and wool ones. All work. So, it is really your preference and how much you want to spend.
Ok... I just went to target and got a long sleeve running jacket that' fleecy inside. I also got the cheap $1.50 gloves. I bought a long sleeve running shirt, also, but tried it on and it already felt scratchy.
That's going back.
What I'll probably do is just go with one of my own workout tanks/tees and layer those two underneath and put the running jacket and gloves over the top with my bandanna over my ears to keep them warm and my long pants that are thick-ish. I *think* I'll be okay. heh.
