Question

When you talk about someone on here to someone who doesn't know you frequent an online forum, do you start the sentence with:

"Yeah, my friend from [Northern Minnesota, KC, Florida, Texas, Jersey, Boston, etc.]..." or "Yeah, my friend who is a [lawyer, HR professional, university teacher, special ed teacher, etc.]..." without letting on that you may or may not have ever met this individual in person?

I think I sound so much more impressive knowing lawyers and people from other parts of the country personally.

Re: Question

  • I don't mention that you guys are "internet friends".  Gets too many weird looks.
  • LOL!

It depends who I'm talking to.  Eric knows about you guys.  When I talk about people from other places that my mother hasn't already heard of (like from college), she'll ask, "Is this someone you met on the computer?"  With other people, if I care to or it's relevant, I may explain the knot/nest thing.  And with some, I'll just say "a friend who's a..." if it's relevant or "a friend in..." whatever state.  Or just "a friend from online."

People know I'm a big geek, so no one blinks at me for having friends online.  Hell, I started online in 1992, and stayed one night of our honeymoon at an online friend's apartment in Cork, so if they're not used to it by now, they don't really know me.

  • I just say "my friend in X state", unless I'm talking to DH. Then I say my nestie friends.

Yup! Totally this. I told my boss on our business trip to Seattle if we have a client in Iowa, I have some friends there (same with Texas, NJ, VA, etc etc).

H knows about you all...made it easier when we met Holly and her H, he didn't think I was as crazy then!

    Yep, me too =)

  • I only allow certain people to know that I have friends online. Otherwise, I give as little info about how I know you as possible because of the weird looks.
