Tell me more about this "ditch along the run" stuff...

With all the comments about my upcoming race in the frrreeeezing cold temps, I take it this is a race 'norm' to ditch shirts/gloves/hats/whatever along the way.  ?

So, who cleans it up? What becomes of the stuff? Why is this normal for races and not considered 'littering'?

Clue me in ladies! :D

Re: Tell me more about this "ditch along the run" stuff...

  • I have seen plenty of long sleeve shirts, gloves, etc just tossed off the side of the road. I've also seen gu wrappers too, and many many maaaaaany people toss their cups just willy nilly when they drink at the hydration stations. I think it's pretty common, and the race organizers/volunteers will pick it all up. However, I do tend to feel better about tossing my stuff in the trash cans when I can. There should be trash cans at the end of every hydration station (should be every two or so miles), so if you want to toss your gloves but don't want to litter or think of someone else picking it up, you can always pull them off as you approach the hydration station and toss in the trash. I accidentally missed the trash with my water cup on my apple hill run and as I turned like I would stop to pick it up, the volunteer was very insistent that he'd get it. They're happy to help out!! :) You're going to have a blast tomorrow! :)

  • race organizers usually donate the 'ditched' items to a local charity (probably after washing them)

I've never had a problem on a 5 or 10k just holding my gloves or tying my long sleeve shirt around my waist.
