Does anyone fry their turkey?

I found out just a couple days ago the DH and BIL have been planning on frying a turkey this year, they got my mom (who hosts every year) to ok it and I just found out saturday (they've been planning a couple weeks).

I'm a little nervous because neither of them have fried a turkey, but I'm trying to have faith in DH that this will all come out safely.  I've had fried turkey once and it's really good, but still a little nervous...

has anyone fried a turkey?  any tips or pointers?

Re: Does anyone fry their turkey?

  • It's been awhile but I've done it a couple of times.  The biggest thing is to not have too much oil in the pot so when you put the turkey in it doesn't spill out on the burner.  You should be able to go online to see how to measure this beforehand.  They have a great flavor anyways, but you can also inject them with marinade to give some extra flavor.  Also need a thermometer to make sure the oil is the right temp.

Oh, and I assume they're planning on doing this outdoors, right?

GL and enjoy!  It will be so yummy!

  • Rule #1: Set it up outside!!!!!  Preferably at least 30-40 feet from the house.  We had one last year, and I think it took about an hour to cook a twelve pound turkey.  It was delicious, I remember the thing they had the hardest time with was getting it out.

    Enjoy it!

  • My family has deep fried a turkey every year for the past 10 years.

    Several important things:

-make sure the turkey is dry (avoid dangerous oil splatters when putting it in the oil)

-use the right amount of oil - like Shannon said. if you use too much it will overflow and that's when dangerous problems arise.

-obviously do this outdoors on a level surface and keep small children and pets away

    -DON'T walk away from it

We love deep fried turkeys (obviously) and one of the big upsides is that it cooks in MUCH LESS time then roasting. We usually get 20 lb. birds and they take like 90 minutes to cook. Last year my dad walked away from it for a few minutes at the end and the turkey got a little charred on the outside.

It's not too late to brine your turkey, either! Brines work wonders for flavor and moisture of the bird.

My family uses something like this. You put the turkey on that thing and then use the hook thing to lower it in and pull it out.

  • Thanks ladies!!  I'll share your points with DH.  BIL has been brining the turkey since yesterday.  They are doing it outside so we're good there.. I'll let you guys know how it goes!  Thanks again
