Question about American Thanksgiving
It seems to be a realllllly big deal, much bigger than here in Canada. It also seems that if you live a distance from your family, you will fly to where they are so you can be together - is that right? We do celebrate it here in Canada (in October) but it's not THAT big of a deal. I think I only travelled home once or twice when I was in university for it (and it was driving distance...about 4 hours drive), and other than that just celebrated it with friends in my own city.
Now that we're living far from both of our families, we will travel to visit my family for one Christmas, and Dave's family the next Christmas. That is expensive enough, I can't imagine also althernating Thanksgiving with our families as well - we just wouldn't be able to afford it!
Do you always travel to be with family for Thanksgiving? Or if you live close already, WOULD you travel if you didn't live close?

Forgot to mention that stores and grocery stores and EVERYTHING closes down on Thanksgiving. Didn't know if it was the same for you...
Also, do you know about Black Friday? The day after Thanksgiving, stores open really early (like 3am) and have MAJOR sales and people wait in long lines & get in fights in Walmart & stuff. It's craziness.

Yeah, Thanksgiving is only slightly behind Christmas for most Americans as far as important holidays go. I've never gotten all that bent out of shape about it, myself, as I'm not one for gluttony and/or gravy, but I'm definitely in the minority.
I never went home for Thanksgiving when I was in college, but then, home was 2200 miles and two time zones away. Also, I went to a school that had a lot of students from quite a distance and always had (due to the way the Church of the Nazarene splits the country up into districts and has a college for each one).
They had Homecoming during Thanksgiving back then, and it worked out nicely because there was always a ton of stuff to do, what with the concerts and banquets and plays and stuff. Those of us who were from far away didn't have much down time to dwell on what we were missing back home, ha! A lot of kids were also in choirs or drama or what have you and had to stay because of that. But then, a lot of their parents and grandparents were alumni, so they would either for Homecoming or had settled nearby. There was always some hospitable family to "adopt" me for the day.

It's a pretty big deal. My building is closed Thursday and Friday (it's a corporate office). Both of our families are local but I think we would travel if they weren't (I don't think I would have a choice when it comes to my mom).
On our way home from late Thanksgiving lunch with my family we passed two Best Buys.... both with people camping outside waiting for the sales to start. ( this was at about 6pm) Crazy cakes.
I never have and quite possibly never will shop on Black Friday. I think I went to Target last year bc I needed a few things but it was at like 7pm so the craziness was over and done with.
Thanksgiving is huge for my family, almost as big as Christmas. Everyone lives withing half an hour of eachother, but if we didn't we would definitely find a way to see eachother. I do have one cousin who lives in Delaware and she always comes down.
I also get Thursday and Friday off work, but I never go shopping on Black Friday. I'm sitting on the couch in my lounge clothes as I type getting ready to clean the house lol
I am a little behind on this but Thanksgiving I have to agree is huge here. For my family it starts off the holiday season. I have to start baking now. Tomorrow we will be going tree shopping. WOooohooo I can't wait to bring home a tree. Let it set over night then decorate it on Sunday. We bake and Cook for 2 days straight at thanksgiving. I have no family close by and no I would not fly for thanksgiving. NO Way don't think I would fly for christmas either but I have kids so thats just not something we would consider!!!
I am working today so no Black friday shopping for me!!!!!
I was just thinking about this too. Traditionally, my family doesn't allow Christmas music until we sit down to Thanksgiving dinner, since Thanksgiving "officially" starts the beginning of the holiday season. I think that Thanksgiving is generally used as the start of Christmas season throughout the US.
We set up our (fake) tree on Wednesday night and we're decorating it today and putting lights up outside. Cannot. Wait. I heart holiday season.
