Thanksgiving with the Future Step-Family

Thanksgiving was interesting. Went to dinner with my mom, brother, mom's fiance, his 3 grown kids and their wives, plus 3 of his grandkids. Had lots of laughs and lots of food.

I like the guy, he doesn't give me good DenimLorne type stories, but he's a good guy.

The only awkward moment was when his son asked if I can get tenure at my job and I replied with how much longer I had. The daughter with the kids says to me "If the school is still open." WTF? It's a new school and I didn't give any indication that the school was in trouble. Thankfully she is the only member of his family whose crazy isn't the fun type.

Her kids are 3 siblings that she fostered and has adopted or is in the process of adopting. I think that's great but I don't understand why she changed their names to names of Native American tribes including Cherokee. At least I've heard of other kids with the names she chose for the other 2. Neither she nor the kids have Native roots.

If you actually got this far, I have a random question. Anyone have a parent remarry when you were an adult? Do you call them your step-parent or sibling? Or just by name or Mom's husband? I don't actually need to figure it out until next September but as I typed this, I kept pausing not sure how to refer to them.

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz

  • I just call my mom's husband by his name...Larry.  My mom wants to come up with a name for him for the kiddies, but I'm not sure what we should call him bc he's not Grandpa.

  • Oh, that's the other weird thing, hearing the daughter refer to my mom as Grandma when talking to the kids.

I don't know if it's because I thought I was the only chance my mom had at being a Grandma since my brother will likely never marry or have kids. Or if it was just because hearing the sentence"Cherokee give Grandma kisses" made me cringe for the child.

  • But on the up side, I guess I get to be an aunt. But one of his other daughters has the same first name as me so I guess I'll be Aunt L2.

  • I call my step parents by their first names.  My step sisters and I call eachtoher sister Erica or sister Rachel.  It's pretty funny.  Having adult step siblings is fun because it's like having a new friend and you don't have to live with them.

  • My brother is looking forward to being able to complain about his sister Laura because he can always claim he was talking about the other one.
