Reading of the Will- What to expect?
A close family member passed away this week. He left all his property, possessions and assets to me and another family member. His property is to be sold and proceeds divided between us. If I'm planning to donate my portion to his charity, do I need to have all the details worked out before the meeting? I've never been through this- what should I expect?
Re: Reading of the Will- What to expect?
This is what I'm inclined to say as well. The money received from the assets are yours and it's no ones business what you do with the money.
I'm sorry for your loss, as well. The timing is never good but to lose someone over the holidays seems particularly hard.
Thank you for all the comments and advice. Our loved one planned and made preparations so that we wouldn't have to. Still, that didn't prepare us for losing him so suddenly- while we know his wishes and don't have to deal with funeral arrangements, the process of tying up his affairs seems so daunting.

Just an FYI, if some of the possessions are stock / securities that have appreciated in value, then it may save estate tax to transfer the stock/securities directly to the charity. If the estate is not big enough to be taxed, then it's not a big deal. The estate lawyer might be able to guide you.
PS: I have received $$ from a will, and never showed up for the reading. I just got my check and cashed it.
Thank you- this is good advice!

Be sure that you hold back sufficient sums to pay any taxes that will come due because of the inheritance. Speak to a tax person first before giving it all away and then getting hit.
