Ugh. Need help picking a present.

Jeff is supposed to be doing this, but I like to have my shopping done early so I'm taking over.  I'm trying to figure out a gift to get for my BIL's girlfriend.  She's around my age, I guess (26) and she's from Brazil, working here as a nanny.  Since she doesn't have her own place, I don't want to get her 'stuff'.  But I don't like buying people clothes if I don't feel 100% confident that they'll like them.

I've been browsing endless websites trying to come up with something, but I'm stumped.  Any ideas?

  • Gift Certificate?  I LOVE them.  That way she can put towards whatever she wants.

  • That's what I initially told Jeff, but he pooh-pooh'd that.  I think because we both have absolutely no clue where she shops.  Normally I think they are really impersonal, so I don't like giving them, but I since I don't mind getting them (as long as they are to stores I like, especially pricier stores where I don't normally buy myself stuff) I am starting to change my tune.

  • You could always do a gift certificate to a nail salon, or a nice bottle of wine, or something like a handbag or jewelry? And then there's always the option of a joint gift - you could get them tickets to a show?
  • Lotions, shower gels and splashes are always good too.  Bath and Body is a good one because if she doesn't like the scent she can always exchange it for one she likes more.

I like to give things that can be used up or eaten!

  • What about like a pair of movie tickets and restuarant gc? That way she can take bf or a girlfriend?

This is exactly what I recommended to Jeff, but he said no because his brother got us a restaurant GC last year.

I need to just let it go and let him worry about it, but it's driving me crazy.

  • Then what about a straight up visa giftcard? then you don't have to worry about salons or stores or whatever? She can pick what she wants when she wants. Tell hubby man to just let you do it cuz he doesn't know what he's doing and you know a week before christmas you're going to have to do it anyways!

  • What about some jewelry?  There are a lot of cute sets on Etsy or Lia Sophia or one of those types of sites.  How much are you looking to spend?

  • We were thinking $50, and I convinced Jeff to do a BBB GC since they're moving in together at some point (it was supposed to be this month, but it's being postponed, in case anyone remembers my previous post about gifts for them!).  I thought about jewelry but she doesn't usually wear anything but gold hoops, and since I'm the same way (with silver) and I generally hate the jewelry I get as a gift, I figured I'd avoid that.

Kind of a sidenote: Jeff's aunt does Lia Sophia, and I know some of it is pretty (Brew has posted some cute stuff) but what she gets me is some of the most fug jewelry I've ever seen. I feel bad because I know it's not cheap, and I can't return it, I don't think.
