Christmas tree issues

Has anyone ever had an issue with their fresh Christmas tree?

BIL was talking last night about preying mantises that were in their tree one year.  Now we are second guessing getting a real tree, but we don't really want to store an artificial one.

Please share your stories!

Re: Christmas tree issues

  • We never had any issues like that. Only issues with pine needles being everywhere. We have an artificial tree now, and I love it. It makes no mess whatsoever :) And if you like the scent of a tree, Bath & Body makes some great Evergreen candles!
  • Last year when we went to cut down a tree, we saw one with a praying mantis nest on it.  I would say just make sure you look at the branches real good before getting one.  They are pretty easy to spot.  Actually, DH wanted to get the tree just so we could take the nest home and put it in our garden!  They are really good to have around (they eat other bugs and such).

  • I've had a live tree every year for as long as I can remember, and it's never been a problem.  I think we had a praying mantis egg sac in our tree one year, but my dad just cut off the branch that it was on and took it outside.  There wasn't any problem with it.  We did find a bird's nest in one one year too, but that was just really cool.  No birds or eggs or anything, just the empty nest.  I absolutely love fresh trees...they are totally worth it!  Just be prepared to vaccuum up pine needles haha.

  • Wow, I've actually never heard of that and I've had a real Christmas tree as long as I can remember, too.   The farm where we got our tree has a little stand that they fit the bottom if the tree into.  They turn it on and it wiggles the tree like crazy so the dead needles fall out of it.  They leave way fewer needles on your carpet that way!  I think real trees are totally worth it :)

  • I have never heard of this either, and I've always had real trees!  I think you should be fine, just look for those or any birds nests before you choose one!
  • Praying mantis' nests?  In christmas trees? I've never heard of that before...but apparently it happens!  I like mantis' though...so I wouldn't mind.  XD

I just don't like the needles that live trees leave in my house, no matter how well their shaken beforehand. We went to our artificial tree many years ago...and I love it!

However, here's a cool tip...but how true it is, I have no idea!!!!  Local radio station was testing all kinds of home remedies that people add to the water to keep their live trees from losing their needles and drying out.  Sugar water, store-bought products, etc, and reporting on which ones work best.

They stated that the tree that kept the needles the longest was one where they added viagra to the water!  hahahahaha....that still makes me laugh. Again, no idea if it was all just a joke or if they were serious.

This is hysterical, true or not!

Thanks for the advice everyone.  We did decide to go with a small artificial tree.  It is cute and perfect for now.  Maybe someday we will get a bigger tree!

  • Wow! These are all new stories! I have never heard of Praying Mantis or Viagra in Christmas trees before - lol. The place where we go and cut down our trees shakes them out for you. They put it on this little machine and it shakes the crap out of it so all the loose needles fall off. I would hope that would knock any sort of bugs out of it too. But now I am paranoid and am going to have to have DH look over our tree.
