Anyone have a Cricut??

I'm thinking about "wishing" for one for MH to get for me for Christmas, but I *really* don't want to spend all that money on cartridges. Was checking out SCAL (Sure Cuts a Lot) and contemplating getting that instead of the Cricut DesignStudio, but was wondering if anyone owns a Cricut and/or one of the software, and how much they like it/how often they get to use it/etc...

Re: Anyone have a Cricut??

  • I have one!  MH got it for me for Christmas a few years ago.  We don't have a lot of space, so it has been sitting at my mom's house.  I just brought it home a month or so ago and have been having fun with it.  The cartridges, cutting pads, and blades can get expensive.  I bought some cartridges on amazon and they were about half the normal price.  I saw this awesome deal on HSN a few weeks ago.  It was for the cricut expressions and the gypsy and a bunch of cartridges for $400.  If I were to buy one now, I'd definitely go for the bigger expressions machine.  I have been contemplating getting the software too, so I'd be interested to hear what others have to say...

  • Yeah, there's actually a deal for $70 for the machine at Jo-Ann's this Saturday, so that's what's tempting me =P only because it's so cheap!

Glad to hear you like it and are enjoying it =)

  • i don't have a cricut, i don't scrapbook*, but i kinda want a silhouette cutter...  not sure how it compares price-wise with the cricut re cartridges and stuff, but the machine itself is a lot more expensive, since the cricut seems to go on sale a lot.  but it can do so much!  on more than just paper!

    * though i'd like to do digital scrapbooking some day, just don't think i ever will - it took me way too long to make just our wedding album, and that was just laying out photos!  i think i need to just stick with simple photobooks...

  • I have a Cricut and I love it. I have the larger one so I don't have to cut down my 12x12 paper when I am scrapbooking. If you can, buy your Cricut when it's on sale (I purchased mine on eBay and saved a lot). Cartridges frequently go on sale and don't pass up the deals on ohmycrafts.com . Even if you don't scrapbook it's great for creating cards, signs, glass etched items, and vinyl wall decals.

  • I have one too (the expression). I didn't want to buy cartridges either and don't scrapbook, so I got the Make-The-Cut software. Not sure how it compares with the SCAL, but I know that users of SCAL really love it.  The MTC software isn't availible for mac users.

I made fabric envelopes , here  , and just made these wraps for votive holders  here

*edit* The votive wrap that I cut from paper is the one on the right, the one one in back was a lace doily thing wrapped and sewn.

(I seem to have lost my ability to PIP, sorry).

It's one of those tools that takes a little time to figure out, but is pretty fun once you get the hang of it.  I really like the MTC software, I wouldn't have purchased the machine if I couldn't modify it, the Cricut products were too limiting for what I wanted the machine to do.

    * side tip - the machine comes with a sticky mat to position paper on, the mat will eventually lose it's stickiness, instead of buying a new mat, you can just spray it lightly w/ repositionable spray adhesive and it'll work like new :)

Hope that helps, good luck w/ it :)image

Wow, that looks great! I remember your fabric envelopes from your LO's 1st bday...but how did you manage to cut fabric with the machine?!? Did you stick to down to paper first?

I didn't end up snagging a cricut...MH and I caught a nasty cold on Thanksgiving and we've been at home the whole time since. But I think I have my eyes set on the silhouette now, thanks to you =P just because the more we thought about it, the more we don't really want to invest and support in a proprietary model like cricut (esp since MH is a linux junkie =P open-source all the way!). Thanks for introducing it!!

Thanks.  I used interfacing to adhere the fabric to paper, then I stuck the whole thing through the Cricut :)

The SCAL or MTC help you get around the proprietary software issue :)
