Christmas Dinner

So I am hosting either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day dinner for the second time this year. Both of my older sisters homes are too small (so they say) to host. So I am the one that gets to give my mom a break on one of the days. Last year we did the typical turkey, stuffing, mashed, gravy, cranberry sauces, rolls, salads, carrot and turnips mash, etc.

However I really didn't enjoy it that much. I am a pretty good cook and a better baker but I prefer my moms turkey dinner over mine. So I was thinking of doing something different for the day I host. I was think lasagne, garlic bread, ceaser salad or even a Mexican night.

What does your Christmas dinner usually involve and does anyone do anything different? How do you think people will recieve it when they will likely get a turkey dinner the day before or after?

TIA

Re: Christmas Dinner

  • Oh I wish my family would do something different!

My Christmas dinner usually consists of the typical stuff that you mentioned above.  The only thing I really look forward to is the stuffing, because I love it and I only get it a few times a year.  Unfortunately it is a long lived tradition and people would be disappointed if it were changed (but not me).

Once when I was a teen I convinced my mom to make homemade mac and cheese  for Christmas eve dinner, but we still had turkey the next day.  I think the Mexican night sounds yummy.

  • We spend Christmas eve at my husband's aunt's house. Seeing as they have the biggest house out of all of us. What she does is make 2 or 3 kinds of homemade lasagna, that way we aren't turkeyed out by Christmas.

In a matter of 3 days, Christmas eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day we have a total of 4 different dinners to attend. So the less turkey the better.

  • My ILs almost always do the turkey and ham thing so I am so happy that my mom doesn't bombard us with the typical. We often have ribs, steak or something like that for holidays. My mom makes us what we want as a "treat" because she knows the turkey thing is not a treat for most of us. We also do salads like greek or blueberry feta or something like that while at my ILs is always standard lettuce salad (as my MIL refers to it as). When I was a kid we were always at my grandparents OOT for actual Christmas with my Mom's 10 siblings and all their kids so we always had a Christmas dinner with my family at sometime previous to Christmas and mom would always let us pick what we wanted. Sometimes it was pizza, or chinese or other things but we always ate these less conventional Christmas meals with the fancy dishes and nice table cloth. It was always very fun and special.

  • I'll be honest, I LOVE my Christmas dinner! And I always look forward to having two; one with my family, one with the ILs. So I guess if it were me, I'd be a little disappointed if Christmas dinner wasn't "Chirstmas dinner", ya know?
  • Christmas eve in my family is a make your own pizza night at my parents house. We then move on to DH's parents home where they have a barbeque and a fire. Christmas dinner will be at my own home with my family and DH's.

I don't see the point in having the same dinner two nights in a row. I have never known anything besides what my family had done though so it wouldn't seem odd to me. I personally think that people will find it fun or refreshing for a change! Why not start a new tradition??

  • Hosting is awesome, so have fun with it!  =)

I am hosting family over for Christmas too.  For my hubby's family, I will be making a crown rack of lamb, filet mignon, glazed carrots, mushroom caps, ginger creme brulee, and an assortment of Christmas cookies.

In the past I have made a turkey for Christmas with an asian sticky rice stuffing accompanied by roasted winter vegetables.  It works well, and I don't think people will mind getting a turkey!  There are so many different ways to add variety to a turkey.

  • In the past, on Christmas Eve, we have served dishes that represented our family's heritage. We did Tourtiere (French Canadian), trifle (British), shortbread (British/Scottish), Spanakopita (Greek), and a few other family recipes. It was great!

Can I come over to your house for Christmas? That sounds really good, you must be a lot braver in the kitchen than myself lol.

My husband's family has Christmas Eve together every year so everyone can be free to go where they will on Christmas. They generally have more traditional Ukranian food (cabbage rolls, Perogies, noodles etc.) alongside the turkey so there is always lots to choose from. That being said, I am big on turkey so for me it never goes out of style.

I think like you said, lasagna or Mexican night would be a great change to the same old though :) Good Luck!
