Christmas Lights

So DH and I are hanging out Christmas lights up today, and it brought on somewhat of a silly question: what color are your lights?

I really love white lights, as I think that they're just much prettier than the colored ones, but DH hates white lights and thinks the multi-colored lights are the only option for Christmas.  So we comprimised.  Our front has white icicle lights on the roof and blue lights twisted around our entry columns.  Our tree has white lights.  He was happy with the blue lights.

Re: Christmas Lights

  • I like either.  I have owned my home for 5 years and switch back an forth between the outdoor lights being all white or multi-colored(I have enough sets for both).  My HUGE pet peeve is when people mix colored lights and white lights.
  • I like white lights...especially how the white led lights look..they just seem very classy.
  • I grew up always using multicolored, so that's my favorite.  I think DH likes white lights, but I win on the tree.  :)  We put candles in the windows and have a wreath for the front door that has white lights on it.

However;  this does not apply for the new LED lights.  The multicolored ones look different and I definitely don't like them, even though I know they are more energy efficient.

  • We don't hang lights, but I have always preferred white.  I think they look classy.

If done well, multi colored can look good too.  I don't like the new LED multi colored lights though.

  • We're not decorating this year since we're moving around Christmas, but when we do have lights they will be all white. We both dislike colored lights.

  • I am laughing reading your posted b/c we just put up our tree.  Most of the ornaments, decs, lights are mine from when I lived on my own. I have all white lights.  DH commented how he hates them and that xmas lights should be colored.  So, we got into a big conversation about it.  So, I had to laugh when I read your post.

My thoughts are that even though colored lights are what I grew up with, white are classier and I always prefer the "more is less" approach.  I think white lights do this.

  • I grew up with both white and colored lights. To clarify we had multiple trees...one had colored lights and all the cutesy ornaments that we made (you know the spray painted glued on macaroni stuff) and hallmark ornaments. The other tree had white lights and all the fancy ornaments and wound up looking like something out of a magazine.

My DH grew up with only colored lights on his tree....so needless to say he thinks the lights should always be colored. I compromised with him last year and we bought a tree with colored lights since all the ornaments we have for the tree are our childhood hallmark ornaments.

I'm DYING to have one of those fancy, just out a of a magazine trees though. One day I will....a girl can dream in the mean time. :-)

  • I like white lights around the windows and along the railings, but color lights on the trees.
  • Our tree is pre-lite with white lights. We bought the new LED lights for outside and they have a blue tint to them but that was not intentional...not really sure how I feel about it since I was expecting the traditional white but I am not about the climb up the ladder again to take them down.

I like this too.  However, we will not have a tree this year because we do not have room.  While cooking the sides for Thanksgiving, I did do some decorating though. We actually have a string of multi-colored lights and a string of green lights around the apt. to decorate the kitchen and bedroom door frames. Not sure, how I got a string of all green-lol.

  • I like the green too :) Nice!
  • We live in apartment so no house to decorate... I kept a box of white lights that we used to decorate our reception tent, so I hung a strand around our living room. I'll probably keep them up year-round- they make for good mood-lighting. :)

My parents always used multi-colored lights on the house and blue lights on their tree. I put multi-colored lights on our little 3 foot tree. I don't know that I'll be able to put up our tree this year though. Maybe I'll find a spot for it in the kitchen. The cats like to chew on it, but I'm more concerned about the dog getting ahold of it. We'll see!

i guess what I'm saying is, I've always been a fan of any and all Christmas lights.

  • I usually just use white lights but this year I used red towards the trunk of the tree and red on the outside. It looks great!
