My "gourmet" Thanksgiving

Here are pics of the food I made, all from scratch!  Including the gravy and cranberry sauce of course.

If you are a regular Hawaii nestie, and we aren't facebook friends, please add me!  I am searchable under e dot jen dot joo at gmail dot com.

I don't know if I'll ever make such a big turkey again. It was 18 1/2 lbs; my mom encouraged me to buy a big turkey, because my local grocery store was selling turkeys 16 lbs and up at a flat rate of $7 (with a $25 purchase).  But I don't know if I didn't had enough brine; I just didn't like the turkey as much as ones I've made previous years.

And I made 2 turkeys this year over 18 lbs; the one for the church competition had to be above 18 lbs according to contest rules.  I don't know if I can do it again for next year's contest, but I am really competitve!  So maybe I will.

For the contest, the judges only tasted the same part of the breast for every bird.  The guy who won, as he continued carving after the judges got his breast meat, discovered that the meat around the leg was red and not fully cooked!  Me and and another friend who entered the contest thought he should have been disqualified!  Since the rest of his turkey wasn't fully cooked, no wonder his breast meat was tender! (breast cooks faster than the rest of the bird).

Anyway, I'm definitely trying to cook more on normal nights.  Poor James, I don't put much effort in my food until Thanksgiving.  As long as it tastes good enough, I don't investigate fancy recipes for during the week.

How was your Thanksgiving?

  • that looks so good!! and i love your super cute apron!

we went to DH's grandma's siblings gathering (aka very extended family = me trying to guess and learn who is related to who and all their names!), so I just brought dessert, a carrot cake.

We are going to do our own thanksgiving dinner this Tuesday, and its just for the two of us! We got an 18lb turkey because of a deal as well. I am scared now that it is going to be too much!! ahh! My coworker is letting me borrow her giant crockpot so I am going to cook it that way all day. Hopefully it comes out tasty! I am looking forward to doing all this cooking, it is something I really enjoy!

  • ooh, I crockpot sounds like a great idea!  I think the main reason I didn't like my turkey was that it wasn't as moist as in the past.  I needed a better way to brine the turkey.... I brined it in a plastic bag and used 1/2 the amount of liquid that Alton Brown suggested in his recipe... the whole turkey was covered with the brine, but I wonder if having more brine around it would have helped.

I bet the crockpot will make it lovely and moist!  Have a wonderful dinner on Tuesday!

  • OMG that looks so freaking good!! Yum, you're making me drool! Yes, that guy totally should've been disqualified if the legs were uncooked! And I *love* Settlers!! I haven't played in so long =P
