Birth control and antibiotics

Hi everyone!

I have been searching the internet but everything that has come up is just basic information.. I was looking for real people with real experience!

I have been on a antibiotic and I am also taking lo estrogen as my birth control.  How long does the antibiotic usually stay in your system after you stop taking it?  My last day on the medicine was Friday so now I am trying to figure out if I need a back up method anymore.

Also, this is just everyone's opinions but what did you use as your back up method if you have been on an antibiotic?

Re: Birth control and antibiotics

  • you can call up your pharmacist and ask about the specific antibiotic and how long you should wait.

I'm not on hormonal birth control anymore, but I would have used condoms any time we needed a backup.

  • I think it might take up to a week for it to leave your system but I could be wrong.  The best back-up would be abstinence but a condom would be the next best protection.  You could also try spermicide as well.

  • I have been told to abstain or use a back up as long as I was on the antibiotic.  But your doctor or pharmacist can give you more specific information.

  • I normally lurk, but my pharmacist says a minimum of 2 weeks from when you STOP taking the antibiotics...and even then she said in some people it can affect them for up to a month. HTH.

  • My doctor always told me if I wanted to be sure to use a back up until my next cycle.  I always followed that advice and never had an issues.  But I agree with PP, call your pharmacist and ask them.  They actually should have told you when you filled your antibiotic subscription.

  • You should use a backup method for the rest of this cycle. It's not really about how long the antibiotic stays in your system, but that taking it disrupts the cycle.
