Our basment flooded while we were out of town!

We were out of town for 4 days over thanksgiving and we came home to find a pipe attacthed to our sump pump broke and was pumping the water into our basement.  There was about an inch of water at the deepest spot.  We do not have a finished basement, but we do use it alot so we have several large area rugs which are all soked.

We have a carpet cleaner and so we sucked up as much water as we could from the rugs, but they are still damp.  I would love to avoid throwing them away, but I am not sure how to get them clean and dry and get rid of any mildew or mold that may be growing.  What should I do?  Thanks!!

  • We have been using the suction mode only on the cleaner.  I am going to try to run it agian today and see if I can get any more.  We thought about putting them outside, but I am afraid they might freeze.

  • Ditto this.  My mom's carpet cleaner (which we'll have for a while now) doesn't have a suction only option, but you should be able to just not fill it with water (unless yours does have that option).  Set them out if it's warm enough, the sun will kill any mold that's starting to grow (make sure to sun both sides, it's the rays that kill it).  GL, that really sucks.  Broken pipes would be bad enough, but while you're OOT is just terrible, hopefully nothing is ruined.
  • I concur with PPs suggestions, but I just wanted to say good luck OP!  That's such an extreme inconvenience (which is putting it lightly).

  • I used to work for a restoration company and we would tell people who didn't want to file a claim/have us come out to remove all of the water, have fans blowing on everything until completely dry, and then see if you can purchase some type of anti-microbial cleaner (you should be able to find one online). Put the cleaner on the floor and walls and it should hinder any mold from growing.
