I have decided to get one for DH (after the long process of researching all the e-readers). But I have been having an internal debate about whether to get the Wi-Fi only or to get the one with 3G &Wi-Fi. I want it to be a surprise, but also want him to be happy with it.
Anyone have one and want to give opinions either way?
Re: Anyone have a Kindle?
I've heard that wi-fi is really all you need since most places have it.
I just wish the Kindle had the same amenities as other readers, since I think Amazon is the cheapest place to buy the books.

It's the only thing on my Christmas list! I want the 3G one b/c I was thinking what if I'm on the beach and want a new book? or in the car? And Dani's point about some places charging for WiFi.
I too wish that it some of the features others do, like the library borrowing but I'm still set on the kindle.
He does not travel a lot. but he works at a school and I'm not sure if he would be able to get on the wifi with the kindle. He had to download some software to his laptop to acess the network. But at work he would have his laptop with him, so if really necessary he could just hook up and download.
Ugh I hate these kinds of decisions. Almost makes me want to ask him and forget about the surprise so he gets what he wants.... He did say about a month ago hypothetically that he would really only need the wifi. but I also know that he is one of those people who would read something and want to read more information about the subject that is briefly discussed in the book...

I just ordered a kindle for myself (paid for by mom--it's my christmas present). It is scheduled to arrive today!
I ordered the 3G, because I want to be able to download books wherever I am. . .I've had too many experiences while traveling when hotels or other places are trying to charge me for their wifi.
To my knowledge, no. I've never heard of "borrowing" on a Kindle. You have to buy the books from Amazon.

I made the plunge and did the wifi/3g. I'm sure he'll love whichever I got him, but it will be nice to have the convenience of being able to download or google it anywhere.

No you can't, which is why I really want the color Nook, but decided to not spend the money this year.
Actually an iPad is probably the best if you want library books b/c you can just use the adobe reader program and there is iBooks through apple. Unfortunately the iPad is even more $$$.

the problem with the iPad though, is that it is not the e-ink that the e-readers are. It is an LCD screen which does not have the contrast like a real book does, or the other e-readers. Not that an iPad would be bad for other things, but it wouldn't be as good for reading as a specific e-reader. Plus its crazy expensive as you mentioned.

Thank you! I'm going to have to talk to my mom about this. I think she wants one b/c it's the cool thing to have, but hasn't looked into whether it's exactly what she'd use.
My family loves used books. They don't pay full price for many books, and use the library once a week (heck, my mom volunteers there). I just can't see her forking over the dough to buy the kindle version of books she wants to read.
I should say the reason I choose the Kindle over the Nook was one specific reason. kindle has almost all of the "classics" free. I know my husband would be reading a lot of those books, so it was a good option for him. They also have a lot of options of very low priced books. But the new releases and popular books are normally $6-12 from what I saw. But as I said I knew my DH would be reading a lot f the classics and would get select books as new releases.

Reporting back because I received my kindle last night. I LOVE it.
Got the 3G, which was good because I couldn't get it to connect to my home wireless connection last night. It never occurred to me that could be a problem. I figured I might have trouble connecting to wireless when I was out and about at starbucks or a hotel or something, but I seriously couldn't figure out how to get it to connect to my own wireless. boo.
I have 12 books and 2 games on mine already, all free (classics, as you said your DH would like). Eventually I'll order some current books, but I wanted to test it with something free. . .Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is first on my list.
give me his email, i'll send him a subtle message
i actually use mine mostly while i'm pumping and nursing. i have a handsfree pumping bra and it's fantastic to free up my hands while at work so i can read. it really makes the pumping time go by so much faster. it's also great during feedings since it's rather difficult to flip pages
those are the only 2 times in my crazy life i actually have time to read :P
