mamas with kids between 2 and 3
Sooo my nephew is 2 years and 8 mos. He babbles constantly. But it is completely nonsensical and he doesn't seem to be in the slightest bit frustrated that nobody understands him. Just walks around babbling. Here is his intelligible vocabulary.
Things I have heard him say
Hi guys
It's all right
I love you

Things my mom says he says that I have not heard
Ruby (cat's name)

He doesn't ask for things to eat or ever say no. How worried should I be?

I wouldn't get too worked up about it honestly. Kids who aren't around other kids may just develop verbal skills more slowly than others, but that doesn't mean they're effed for life or that they won't do just great later on. He could probably benefit from more interaction and some sort of learning activities, but some kids just develop differently than others. Is he developing normally with other physical stuff (jumping, climbing, stacking etc.)?
I know someone who's 3 year old doesn't talk at all. Like at all, ever. If your nephew is stringing together 2-3 words like you described, then I think that's all the doctor really asked about at Connor's well child check.

Andy is slow to build his vocabulary. He isn't around other kids very often. Since he is at home all of the time, we have our routine and we know what he wants. We aren't as good as we should be about making him ask for what he wants. We are making an effort now, and he is speaking more.
I didn't speak until I was 3. My sister and brother (4.5 years and 6 years older than me) would do everything for me and treat me like a doll. After 3, I apparently wasn't as cute anymore, so they stopped paying so much attention to me. As soon as that happened, I started speaking in complete sentences.
The way I see it, people speak out of necessity. Once he finds a reason, he will build his vocabulary.
