How was everyone's Thanksgiving?
Mine was quite relaxing. DH and I went to the beach with my mom and dad. No drama, and lots of wine.
Re: How was everyone's Thanksgiving?
I had a great Thanksgiving. It was very laid back and relaxing. Here is a picture of the feast! Also, there's a post in my blog about the Cherpumple we made for dessert!!!
Hi there! My Thanksgiving was very very interesting.
Last year I ordered an "all natural" Turkey from the Earth Fare--I wasn't as into the local farmers market then as I am now. This year, I decided to order a bird from one of the farmers at the local market. The price per pound was the same as from the Earth Fare last year, so the only real difference is that I was paying the farmer directly, and where I picked it up. I ordered an 18-22 lb turkey for 9 of us. My cousin is a big, big boy, and my husband, as thin as he is can pound it down so I wasn't worried about having just a little bit of leftovers.
I go to pick up the bird on Wednesday and they tell me that their birds were a little bigger than originally anticipated. They ate well and had a good growing season. Ladies, the turkey the boy took down from the truck for me weighed 32 lbs. THIRTY TWO POUNDS. What the heck am I going to do with a 5 year old child?? The box it was in looked like a small casket! I realized that the 5 gallon bucket Dh had bought for brining wasn't going to fit that beast, so we stopped at the Lowes and bought ourselves a garbage can in which to fit it. Then, I was afraid of several other things. 1. Would it fit into/onto my roasting pan? Yes, but we had to take it off the rack and just laid it directly into the pan. 2. Would it fit into my oven? That too, yes, but we had to put the rack on the lowest setting--basically right on the coil, and it pretty much was high enough to cover the entire light. 3. How long would it take me to cook this beast? Butterball hotline only had birds up to 30lbs. We took a shot in the dark that we'd need at least 6 hours--but probably more like 8 hours. Friends weren't scheduled to come until 2pm, so if we wake up and put the bird in at 5:30am, we should be golden.
Imagine our surprise when the temperature of the bird was high enough at 9:30am. Just 4 hours after I put him in. Holy Crikes! I hadn't even started making any of the other sides yet (I had made anything that needed to bake the night before so I could just reheat in the microwave or put in the oven while the turkey 'rested'). We called the friends and had them come over early. I had to put out the appetizer cheese tray WAY earlier than anticipated and our guests demolished that tray.
And the best part was--it was all worth it. That beast of a bird was DELICIOUS. He was cooked perfectly--this was the first year we had tried brining, and I probably won't ever NOT do it now. The flavors were GREAT! (We just used Alton Brown's recipe from Food Network). The rest of the food was pretty decent as well. I don't have any pictures today, but I'm going to try and get you one for tomorrow. I've never eaten anything that big.
HOLY CRAP! We did a little 7.5 turkey because it was just DH and I and we still have leftovers!
We could eat for a month off of a 32lb turkey!! Lmao
Curiosity. . .how is the pricing with them per poundish? If you don't mind me asking?
DH and I made the little turkey, which was interesting because it was the first time for both of us. I made candied yams, beans, corn, cheesy-garlic biscuits, cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes. We made WAY too much, but we're still eating it, so that means less cooking this week Lol. It was all delicious.
After we ate, we went over to our neighbors and played Catch Phrase and had fun. . then at midnight went for a little shopping
)
Overall it was great. I was on break from classes and actually relaxed and just vegged which was desperately needed.
Now onto Christmas decorating!
)
I want to see a picture of this bird! I can't even imagine a turkey that big!!!
Well, thankfully the farm was kind enough to only charge us for what we were "expecting." So, while I got a 32 lb turkey, they only charged me for 22 lbs. It was $3.99 a pound, I believe. It was still a good chunk of change--but it was one heck of a bird.
