Belize?

has any one been? what can you tell me about it?

Re: Belize?

  • Just on a cruise, we stopped in Belize City and we snorkeled most of the day.  It seemed really expensive, but again we were there with 4 other ships that day.  Probably not the best rec, sorry I don't have more information!

  • My BF and I stopped there on a cruise 5 years ago, we toured some Incan ruins.  It was pretty sweet.  We did feel pretty unsafe though, but we were only 21 and on our own.  I think I would feel a lot safer going back with my DH along though.

  • Are you going? When? Take me with you?!

H and I were in Belize about a year ago for our honeymoon. We spent 2 weeks on Ambergris Caye. We stayed at Matachica (http://matachica.com/belize/index.php). Amazing service, AMAZING food (I ate lobster every night!).

Seriously, we still have dreams about our trip and can't wait to go back!

email me at RachelRenee53@hotmail.com if you have any questions.

  • My husband and I went on our honeymoon to Belize.  It's an AWESOME country to visit - and very safe if you stay in the 'touristy' areas.  Mainly, Ambergris Caye is the place to be.  We stayed at the Victoria House and could not have asked for anything better.  We did snorkeling and a fishing trip and then mainly lounged around and relaxed otherwise.  We then stayed in-land at Chaa Creek resort because we wanted to to the ATM cave and see the Mayan Ruins at Tikal.  Both of those are a full day or over-night trip from the Island, if you'd rather do that.

I did feel safe the entire time I was there.  It's definitly not the richest country in the world, but the people are SO nice and hospitable! Let me know if you have any more question.

  • We spent 9 days in Belize for my best friend's wedding in January 2005. The first half of the trip was on Ambergris Caye, and the second half (and the wedding) was at Five Sister Lodge, up in the mountains: http://www.fivesisterslodge.com/index.html

We had SUCH a great time on this trip.  On Ambergris Caye we snorkeled (some people did scuba) and rented bikes to ride across the islands.  Up in the mountains, we toured caves (one cave was explored by canoe) and Mayan ruins.  Lovely time, and the people were all very friendly.

The trip was all pre-planned for us, so I don't have much info about that aspect of traveling to Belize.  I do know that transportation issue can be... adventurous.  Our water taxi to Ambergris Caye broke down both coming and going... on the way back, we actually were adrift in the ocean and had to be rescued by another water taxi!  We rented vans to drive everyone up to the mountains, and on one of our trips back from the caves, we flooded out the van trying to drive through a river (that had become quite large during the rainstorm that hit while we were in the cave), and we ended up having to try and push the van through the river, and then we got stuck in the mud and had to all get out and push again...  definitely made for some fun adventures!

Let me know if you have any more questions!  We'd definitely recommend it and would like to go back someday.

  • Well, nothing is for certain but we have been tryin to plan a vacation to Cancun with our neighbors and kids but they aren't great about getting back to us. Lars said yesterday if they don't get back to us this week, we're going to Belize instead. We'll see... I have to see how serious he was but he did give me the serious face! Lol. Thanks for your recs and info. It gives me a place to start.
  • We went for our honeymoon in 06 and loved it.  We stayed on Ambergris Caye and split our time between the furthest resort north on the island (Tranquility Bay) and a hotel just south of San Pedro (Corona del Mar).

I'm not sure if things have changed in the last 4 years but if you end up at a hotel north of the "cut" make sure the water taxi goes that far or that you have access to roads and a golf cart.  We ended up pretty much stranded at TB because there was no water taxi service and no roads.  The food sucked and the staff basically disappeared during the day when they claimed to be available to take us back to San Pedro for tours and whatnot.

ETA:  Avoid the glass bottom boat.  It's exciting for the first 5 minutes until you realize it's cutting into your snorkeling time.

  • I was there just for a few hours on a cruise stop but that is my favorite place I have gone snorkeling so far!  They have a barrier reef that is really great- lots of colors and fish.  My parents went to some ruins on that trip and they really enjoyed that as well.
