As you may know, James and I have been living on a really tight budget this year (because I am still on disability), but his brother had his first child this July. So his brother is paying for our flight to come visit and see our niece for the first time! I'm excited, but I wish I had a few less inches around my stomach. His niece is so adorable though! Can't wait to see her. I want James' niece to feel equally like my own niece, though I know that when my only sibling has a child, it will be different, more significant I guess because of being blood relations. I want to get closer to my sister-in-laws and ILs, but it's hard living on the mainland and them living in Hawaii.
We'll be there Dec. 3-8 mostly (traveling Dec. 2 and Dec. 9) ... any suggestions as to what to do in our free time? I've never been to Pearl Harbor, do you like it? ... my fave place in Oahu so far has been the Lanikai beach area with its' pale aquamarine waters.
Isn't there some kind of cliff or something on the windward side? It was mentioned (and they went there) in the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Anyone know what is that area called? And any adivce for good hikes that won't be too hard on my poor hubby (who's not in the best shape; the hikes we used to here in SoCal, he can no longer do).
I would appreciate any suggestions in terms of what you think are the best experiences in Oahu! Haven't been to the shrimp truck on the North Shore yet either.
Re: Going to Oahu this week!
YAY! I'm here now. It is gorgeous. Waimanalo Bay Beach Recreation area is gorgeous. I'm not sure about the cliff you mention.
They have lots of holiday stuff going on now.
Have a great trip.

Whoohoo! That's great!! A free trip too! Congrats on their baby and he's so nice for flying you guys over! I never went during the winter but I'm sure the weather is fantastic there!
I like Pearl Harbor, but you have to get there super early in the morning to get tickets for a tour later in the day (they're free), so keep that in mind.
You should totally hit up the shrimp truck but remember not to get there past 6pm-ish cuz they close shop when the shrimp sells out! When we went, we were lucky enough to snag the last 2 plates!
I'd love to check out the cliff from FSM too, but I don't know what/where it is =P
HAVE FUN!!

have fun Jen!! I'd suggest Waimea Falls Park and Byodo-in temple for non-beach activities. But definitely stop by Lanikai. I made sure to begin and end our trip there...it's my favorite beach everrr.
have fun!!
Oh and go eat at Hapa Grill for me...I've been craving it since we got back a couple of weeks ago..
thanks everyone! for the well wishes and great ideas. I never heard of a lot of them. I'll let you know where we end up going!
Have a great time! I don't think there is any cliff diving/jumping on Oahu but lots of people jump off of this rock at Waimea Beach! (Once you climb over the "no jumping" sign!)

Head to Sunset Beach and watch the large waves and surfers. Just park anywhere along the N. Shore and find a public access to the beach!
Jackass Ginger Falls is a great and easy hike. Manoa Falls is a little more challenging...straight UP!

Maybe they filmed it in Cali and pretended it was Hawaii
