How do you feel about guns in your home for personal protection?
B and I are currently researching handguns. I hate the thought of having a gun in the house, but on the flip side, it does give me peace of mind. Its sad to think that people (especially this time of year) will break into your house and steal the things you work so hard for.
We are also researching lock boxes and I think we are going to get a lock box that has a hand scanner to open it. So the only people who can open it are the people whose hand is "programmed" in.
Re: Guns in your home?
We have one. It is hidden, but not locked up. The reasoning for that? We don't have kids. And maybe we're just a little stupid too, haha. If we ever do decide to have children, or if we have more than one gun, we will invest in a lockbox/safe.
Brandy - did you take classes or did your dad or DH teach you?
I won't buy the gun and not take the class that either Bass or Cleland offers.
I was raised with guns...all my family hunts, even the girls. So I've been able to shoot handguns and shotguns since I was like 10. No classes...just taught by my family.
I've had a handgun of my own that I kept in my room up until recently. I would love to have another...but with the mental issues we're dealing with in my oldest son, it's not good timing.
We've been looking/researching for a long time... Now that H has a job again, we're probably going to get one soon. We're not at all against guns. Our neighborhood has had a lot of bad action lately, so it will make us feel a lot better about that, too. We have a back gate that we never use but that apparently someone has been using because it's been open a few times in the last few weeks... And that scares the crap out of us. Not to mention SIL's house getting broken in to last summer (they live on our street) and my car getting broken in to a few weeks ago.
We have no kids... but we still want a lock box. We're probably going to get the fingerprint scanner one.
We've both been to the range a lot and we both plan to take the pistol class and get CCs.
I am terrified of guns. I've only had bad terrible experiences with them and never learned about them properly like other people who have them for protection or hunting. I have really bad irrational fears too about DS (or LO) playing at someones house and not realizing the difference between a real gun and a fake gun. They seriously scare the crap out of me.
I don't personally know how much protection it would give someone for a breakin situation. IMO, if it were the middle of the night and I woke up with an intruder I'd be bewildered, want to call 911 and then would somehow have to take the time to unlock the safe and load the gun. By the time all of that occurred, I think I'd be dead. DH is completely helpless (and blind) in his sleep and without his contacts.
