Runners check in!

1) How did last week go?

2) Plans for this week?

3) QOTD: What do you wear for running in cold weather? (define how cold is cold as well.. since we live in different areas)

Re: Runners check in!

  • 1) Last week went fine. I got 2 runs in. One was on thanksgiving day in Santa Fe where they have high altitude. That was rough and cold!

    2) I plan to get 3 runs in and weight training.

    3) I dont really have anything except a couple long sleeve tops and a vest. I was thinking about getting longer pants or tights or something.

  • 1) Last week, I ran 3 times - 8, 3.25 and my 5 mile turkey trot on Thursday (was actually only 4.91 miles).  It all went well, except for the bitter bitter cold of the turkey trot.  I'll define that cold in question 3 ;)  Since my PR half, all of my runs have been faster, and I actually am finally starting to feel like a runner (sorta).  I love it.

    2) This week, I'll do 6/4/4/3, and this Sunday, I will run 5.9 in the first leg of the CIM relay.

    3) Sooo...with a turkey trot planned in Iowa, I knew there was potential for REAL cold, so I purchased cold gear Under Armour tights on Amazon a few weeks ago.  I LOVE them.  They advertise that they're for weather under 50, so I wore them in a bit for some high-40's runs prior to my turkey trot.  The whole week leading up to the TT was in the 40's in Des Moines...but on race day?  18* at the start.  I was a frozen icicle.  I couldn't feel my feet or legs for a full 2 miles and my head felt like someone was driving an ax into my forehead.  It was pretty miserable.  For THAT weather, I wore my tights, two pairs of socks (one balega, one cotton over the top of those), a wicking tank top under a long sleeve wicking shirt, under my Adidas mesh-like running jacket.  I wore wicking gloves and hat, and a fleece gaiter (courtesy of my uncle) with only my eyes showing through for the first couple of miles (helped warm my breath).

BUT, normally, for 40's degree running (about as cold as it gets here - Sacramento area), I wear capris or tights, long-sleeve wicking top (i love Old Navy's long sleeve tops with thumbholes), a headband (wicking) to cover my ears, and sometimes my jacket.  I'm hoping to run at lunch and it's 48 now, so I'll be in capris and a long sleeve with ear cover.  If it were in the low 40's, I might use my gloves too for the first little bit.  I'm scared to run (unless it's sub-30) in hats since I never do.

  • 1) How did last week go? Great! I am part of a holiday challenge (see pic below) and it has really motivated me to keep active and eat as I normally would during the holidays.

    2) Plans for this week? Since I have not signed up for any runs for the remainder of 2010, I am looking into my first run of 2011! It is in March and I am debating whether to do a 5K or 10K. I have decided not to do any 1/2 marathons until I can get some good times for 5K & 10K's under my belt...oh and lose some weight :-)

    3) QOTD: What do you wear for running in cold weather? (define how cold is cold as well.. since we live in different areas). Well, since I am outside for my boot camp class (and it is dark!). I layer up. I usually have a tank top, a moisture wick long sleeved top and then a short sleeved top over it.

  • 1) How did last week go?  Went good.  I got in 2 runs during the holiday weekend.  One in the rain so I felt pretty awesome.  I also did more weights last week than I had done in a while.2) Plans for this week?  2 short runs (knocked one out at lunch today) and 1 long (at least attempt one this weekend).  Spin and weights as usual.3) QOTD: What do you wear for running in cold weather? (define how cold is cold as well.. since we live in different areas) Cold to me is 40's.  I wear long wicking pants, long sleeve running shirt (thicker than the regular shirts but still breathable.  I have one by Asics and one by Nike),  and gloves.
  • 1) Last week was great. Did my first official run - Thanksgiving morning Turkey Trot. I made great time and was really proud that I finished my first 10k. YAY.

    2) Well, my plan this week is to rest my feet from running. The 10k was actually longer - more like a 11.75k due to a miscommunication between the race coordinators and the volunteers. Well, it did a number on my feet and one of my toes is giving me some trouble. :(  So, I'm laying off the running for a week or 2. Other cardio doesn't seem to bother it much, so I'll keep with my other spin, step, etc routines.

    3) My Turkey Trot was the coldest run I've ever done. I don't usually run in the cold. I'll do a treadmill or just do a cardio class inside at the gym rather than outside. It was about 32-34 for the trot and that felt pretty cold! I was icy.  I'm going to say 30 is prob about the lowest I'd go. I wore long pants (lululemon) that were thicker - more like yoga thickness/softness, with a wicking tee and a long sleeve wicking, fleecy hoodie, a bandanna over my ears and gloves (the cheap $1.50 stretchy from target). Around mile 2, I took off the gloves and around mile 3.5, I took off the jacket and went in my tee. It worked good enough for me for that run. I think if I were more serious about running in the cold, I'd probably invest in  some nice running gloves and a better jacket that breathes and still keeps you warm.

  • 1)  Last week went fairly well.  I got 2 runs in, one being a 10K turkey trot.  It was in Walnut Creek and it was quite cold!  32 degrees when we left the house.  Would've liked to get another run in, however, I had too much fun Friday nite.

    2)  Hopefully 3 or 4 runs.  Ran Sunday (5 mi.), hope to tomorrow or Thursday and Friday.  Saturday, I'm doing a 5K in SF with Girls on the Run  (www.gotrbayarea.org-if interested).  I've volunteered as a Running Buddy!

    3)  Being from Boston, I shouldn't be bothered much by the cold, but I've been in CA for 6 years.  So...below 35 degrees is cold for me.  I try to tough it out, but definitely can't bear it like I used to!  With that, I usually wear capris, t-shirt, and a long sleeve shirt if it's REALLY cold.  If it's above 45 degrees, I'll wear shorts, t-shirt, and l/s shirt.
