Air Duct Cleaning?

I've heard it's great to have it done... I've heard it's not worth it at all. Thoughts? Experiences? Please & Thanks :-)

Re: Air Duct Cleaning?

  • We just had ours done. I think the house smells a little cleaner now.

However, our furnace people said that there are several ways of doing it. If a guy shows up with a shop vac and says he's charging $60, it's supposedly not worth it. If they charge $500 and have a huge machine and attach to every single vent in the home.... well, that's what we had done, but it was less expensive since we had it done as a package deal with the purchase of our heat pump.

If you don't have problems with allergies, I say leave well enough alone. Our house had dogs in it before we moved in, and DH said that he could still tell. After having the vents cleaned, I think it removed the final traces of dog smell.

The amounts may be different depending on your area, but ITA with the above. There should be a large machine that is attached to your vents... not just some dude with an ipod and a shop vac.

  • Yeah, we had it done in DH's old house a few years ago.  We didn't know much about the owner history (it was about 30 years old) and did a lot of renovation work (removing stucco ceilings, sanding, replacing molding, etc.).  I don't think you can say "it's not worth it" because I saw photographs of the ducts before and after as well as what came out of them - it was gross, and surely not that healthy.  Don't remember off the top of my head, but think it was about $500 and took 6 hours if not the entire day.

  • I'm so happy that you posted this.  We just bought a house and the previous owners had cats (we're allergic) and we were about to hire a $50 person.  Perhaps we need to rethink, but I think it's important for health reasons.
