Update: Airport Security

Just thought I'd let you girls know about our experience traveling this weekend. We flew to Syracuse and back with baby and puppy! Everything went super smooth except for the way back. Leaving out of JFK on Wednesday was so easy it was laughable! There were no naked scanners and we actually got to the airport and through security in an hour! I wore Freddie in my Beco carrier and when I went through the metal detector everything was fine, an agent just check the straps, but he stayed in the carrier and on me.

On the way back was a different story! Wearing basically the same clothes and Freddie in the carrier, I went through the metal detector just fine. But they wouldn't let me finish going through security without the extreme pat down. I have to be honest, at first thought I was fine, but looking back, it made me really uncomfortable. I had to take Freddie out of the carrier, we had to send the carrier back through security, she had to 'pat down' my 8 month old son (seriously??!!!!) and I had to be subjected to it. And let me tell you, it is not comfortable, she had to feel inside my pant waist area, around my chest....and the weirdest thing....the bottom of my feet. I'm really disgusted with the TSA. It's fine if they need to boost security, but at least have it be equal across the board. In retrospect, I would have requested something different to avoid the pat down. I told the agent we didn't have this problem when we flew out of jfk and she said, well next time down wear your baby in the carrier. Completely unnecessary and invasive!

And I filed a complaint with the TSA. Not sure where that will get me...

Re: Update: Airport Security

  • Ugh.  So silly.  If you read my response to the last airport scanner post, you'll understand why I think all of this isn't warranted.

I hope you had a fun time in Syracuse, though.

  • Yuck, sounds awful.  I?m sorry you had to go though that.  I hope you had a good holiday!

  • We flew to Louisville out of Newark and had a similar experience.  Security in Newark seemed almost non-existent (carried baby through the metal detector in the ergo) but when we left Louisville, I had to take the baby out of the carrier and put it through the xray OR I could've had "the pat down" .. I opted to take baby out and just walk through.  Oh, the baby had to take her shoes off.  Really? BABY SHOES?

The most amusing part is, DH's camera bag got thoroughly searched (it's a big bag that carries the camcorder, dslr & laptop) but I walked right through the metal detector with my sunglasses on my head with no issues.  (it's sort of a game I play w/ tsa.. NONE of them have ever asked me to remove my sunglasses.. and I've been on a lot of flights in the last 2 years) ...

That being said, neither Newark or Louisville had the back scatter machines ..

  • Thanks for the updates!

Liza, I am sorry you were in an uncomfortable situation, but good for you for filing a complaint!!  I plan to do the same if anyone touches me.

  • I checked and the airports we're using for the holidays don't have the new scanners. I don't like people touching me, but I'm not sure about being pregnant and going through the scanner.

Security is much tighter in Minneapolis, but luckily they're usually nicer also than in NYC. Bottom line is while people are invading you're personal space like that they need to be very polite. They're touching you more than your regular doctor!

  • ugh.  so sorry, liza.  that is really obnoxious.

we had a similar experience recently, though not as drastic...it was waaaaaaaay easier to leave NYC than it was to leave chicago.  no serious pat-down or anything like you had, but it was much tighter, and for seemingly no reason.

  • I'm sorry you had to deal with that, what a PITA! I hope something comes out of your complaint.
  • Boo indeed! But it's good that you filed a complaint. You never know what will happen!!

That reminds me of the time a while back that i flew with colored pencils and a metal pencil sharpener. It was *totally* fine out of La Guardia but in *El Paso, TX* the security guy noticed it, chastised me for it and almost didn't let me have it!!

So what's the deal with NYC airport security being more lax than elsewhere?!

  • OMG Liza... he is so beautiful...the puppy too! Anyhow around the time I had Ori they had you pour out a little bit of the milk in the bottle so they could test it. I thought that was crazy too. And it took us so long to get through security.
  • That's craziness. I think you should be entitled to carry your infant son however you choose to...they have some nerve!

I'm sorry you had to go through that...good for you for filing a complaint! I hope it doesn't fall on deaf ears.
