Help-towels not soft and can't use vinegar or fabric softener

I received bath towels from JC Penney last year for wedding gifts and really love how they have held up (kept their shape, haven't snagged, color stayed true) except that they are not soft at all anymore.  I follow the care instructions when I wash them and don't dry them on low heat settings in the dryer.  I have even hung them outside to dry (which just made them less soft and stiff), but they are not soft anymore.  I don't use fabric softener as I have heard that it is not good for the towels for absorbancy.  My washing machine manufacturer, LG, does not recommend I use vinegar in my machine for clothing, just to clean the machine.  Is this normal or should they still be soft?  What can I do to remedy the situation other than use fabric softener?

Re: Help-towels not soft and can't use vinegar or fabric softener

  • Don't use fabric softener (liquid or dryer sheets). It does in fact reduce the absorbency of fabric.

Just wash them normally and use dryer balls or clean tennis balls in the dryer. It should help fluff them back up.

Personally, I have cheap towels from Target. They're washed in hot water with free and clear detergent (no vinegar or other additives) and just dry them on the medium heat setting (no dryer balls or dryer sheets) and they're still soft. They're about a year and a half old now.

  • I found that when towels were not soft, there was too much detergent in the washer

In a regular old fashioned washer, when you look in while it is agitating, you should still be able to see some water, not inches of suds.  We have soft water so I actually use only about 2T of powdered tide per load.

  • We have an HE front loader and I use the HE detergent.  I don't much, but maybe I will cut back a little more and see what happens.  I will try the tennis ball idea too.
  • This may be a stretch, but my mom has done this:  Rinse the towels in a solution of vinegar + water in the sink or even the bathtub to get all of the built up soap out (basically, to clarify the towels), then rinse thoroughly with water.  Then wash them like you normally would.  She says it helped with her towels...

  • I don't see how if vinegar won't hurt the machine during cleaning it could hurt when there are towels in there?

but really, how much water do you actually need towels to absorb? softener can't make them totally useless, can it? before we met, my husband used to wash his with it and says he can't tell the difference when I don't.

  • I have to admit, I am seriously thinking about using softener on them every once in a while.  They are almost like sandpaper...okay, not that bad, but not even close to soft and fluffy.
  • my exboyfriends mom always used dryer sheets for her towels and i never did, we lived together and i could tell a huge difference in the absorbancy.

i agree with the pp that said it wont hurt the washer to use vinager in the wash if its fine in to clean the machine, i just wouldnt use vinager everytime, just once in a while.

the dryer balls are awesome too, cuts drying time and no chemicals, no waste and no repeted purchases, plus no remembering which loads get softener and which dont.

children's sleepware also shouldnt be washed/dried with softeners because it ruins the flame retardancy of the clothes.
