Why do people spell Florida FLORDIA??
My half sister who lives in California and goes to ucla spells it like that all the time and I feel like it would be rude to correct her. And then I go on the bump board this morning just to see someone else spell it Flordia. Oh, and when I lived in california, I got a nasty note left on my car telling me to go back to Flordia! Where do people learn this?
Re: Stupid, but so annoying
Why would it be rude to correct her? I don't think it's rude. There is such a thing as spell check and if she isn't using it then you get to spell check her. IMO.
I would want someone to tell me If I'm constantly spelling something wrong. I use the spell check feature on everything, and If i'm not sure I usually dictionary.com it.
You can't complain about it if you never say anything to her about it.
Could it be a typo?? I don't think it would be rude to correct her. Then again, I'm one of those mean spelling judgers..
No not a typo bc she spells it like that alot. I always respond to her on FB using the correct spelling of Florida and she still doesn't get it. I'll just correct her, whatever. I guess it would be wrong of me not to.
That is annoying! I know what you mean my sister is super sensitive so if I were to do something little like correcting her spelling that she would blow up!
So I let things like that go,( even though it?s annoying) so I don?t ruffle any feathers!
Well, I'm another person who will correct someone if I see them do it a lot. (for ex, "a lot" is 2 words. Sorry, can't help it!) But I understand, I always feel like a jerk when I correct, since people usually get a little offended. In your case, I would find a kind way to correct her. She should know how to spell "Florida" for pete's sake, that's ridiculous!
And I've actually never seen anyone spell it that way, which I'm glad about!
Another one that people commonly spell wrong is "definitely". It has no "a". Oh yeah, I'm all about the spelling lessons
Hopefully I spelled nothing wrong in this post... even I (lol) make silly mistakes quite often, I'm sure!
definitely is my most commonly misspelled word. I just can't remember how many freakin' "i's" or "e's" it has. I always have to spell check that one. Maybe I should break it down de- fini - tely . Maybe I can remember that.
I don't know my half sister IRL so that's kind of why I let it go too. We're planning to meet in may so, I just don't know how she would react to little things. Now my sister I grew up with, I have nooo problem telling her anything!
That's what I do; I always remember that it has "fini" in the middle, with no "a".
Going off on a tangent a bit-- a good friend of mine constantly spelled it "definately" in her emails to me and it drove me batty, but I never wanted to offend her by correcting her. Finally one day I couldn't stand it any longer and I let her know how to spell it correctly. I could tell she was offended, but she sure never spelled it wrong again! Plus, she took the opportunity to vent about one of my annoying habits- she hated that I would write "nite" instead of "night". (which was dumb of me, don't know why I'd write that) And because of her complaint, I always spell the word correctly now
So I think it does help to correct people, even if they are momentarily annoyed. As long as you do it kindly.
Oh, then I totally understand why you would be hesitant to correct her....
LOL see I knew I was going to spell something wrong in this post!! Thanks for the correction
I always spelled definitely wrong until someone corrected me. Like, I seriously went through college probably spelling it wrong. How embarrassing.
I'm not a good speller, and sometimes I spell things at work while doing an online demo where clients see and I'm on my other computer screen (where they can't see) spell checking it.
Here is one I do have the hang of that I notice a lot.

The only thing I can think of to defend the spelling error is because California is spelled with "-NIA" on the end and they are probably used to typing that out, so "-IDA" doesn't feel natural...? I'm reaching.
On the "definitely" topic, I'm SUPER annoyed when people write "DEFIANTLY". No! <shakes head> I think they are using spell check and that is the first word that comes up and they just choose it. It happens more than you might think.
