After today, I'm scared of our next flight, ~6 hrs to Seattle in a few weeks.
We are victims of our own success. We've sleep trained Mucho so well she needs hardly any props to fall asleep -- no paci, no rocking, just a lovey and some white noise. I know we are lucky. However, on a plane....this sucks. When she gets tired and fussy, this means we have no go-to move to get her to sleep. I've been able to nurse her to sleep on take off but the longest she'll stay asleep in the Ergo or in arms is 45 min. I think it's because at that point she wants to roll over, stretch out, etc. I don't see any way to accommodate that in an Economy seat (or even a First class seat, to be honest, which I would seriously consider paying for if I thought it would help).
Any suggestions? Crazy mom invented products that actually work? I found this Flye Baby thing, but it doesn't look very sturdy.
At this point I'd almost rather be flying international so we could at least get a bulkhead with one of those bassinets they offer.

Re: Caribbean Mamas: Plane advice
If you'd pay for first class seats, would you also pay for another coach seat and bring her carseat? At least she would more or less be in her own setting and probably sleep more comfortably. Also, I know she's young, but would you be opposed to a smarphone app geared towards babies/toddlers that lets her play with the shiny object she never gets to have but wants (your phone) to distract her?
Connor loves games on my phone and I'm 100% convinced that he learns from them too. That's my go to if he's restless in a restaurant, waiting room, or grocery store line.
I don't think it's a coincidence that airline bottles are the perfect size for little hands.
Sean would do even worse in the carseat, but that's just him.
My pedi said she wasn't averse to a little baby benadryl. We haven't tried it (didn't need it this past weekend) but you might ask if you're not opposed.
The hair grows in thick where the horn used to be.
If you go the benadryl route, try it out before the flight first. Some babies have the opposite reaction (um, like baby Bug) and get hyper.
Does she have any favorite/solid foods? Letting her mush up bananas and munch cheerios might keep her content if she starts getting worked up.
I like the phone as a last resort. I recommend the stupid talking cat. At least it'll help her vocalize.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
Ugh...that's rough. I wish I could offer advice. Flying with Miles is unpredictable. Our flight to Aruba was lovely - he slept on me the entire time. Flight back was a nightmare - didn't sleep, and wanted to PLAY!! the entire flight. If he wasn't being constantly amused, he started to lose his mind.
I would definitely try the benedryl, just to knock her out for the flight.
Exactly. She used to dig the carseat but lately she hates it. So that's a no go.
We thought we were so smart, booking the 8 pm flight, so we would take off right at her bedtime and she'd go to sleep on us after a full day at daycare. Now I'm having visions of dealing with a half crazed overtired kid who won't sleep the entire 6 hour flight and bieng THOSE PEOPLE WITH THE OBNOXIOUS BABY KEEPING THE ENTIRE PLANE AWAKE.
I'm not above drugging my kid, but we will definitely give it a try first. My husband has had weird, non-sleepy reactions to benadryl so she might go the same way.
Perhaps this is the perfect excuse to get an iPad and load it up with baby programs.....hmmmmmm.
We flew in the bulkhead back from Florida, and there's quite a bit of leg room. I wonder if we could create a little nest on the floor for her, assuming we can secure the bulkhead seats and the flight attendants don't have a problem with her sleeping on the floor.
ACK. I'm preparing for the worst but still hoping to be surprised.

Definitely check with your doc on dosing first. Benadryl is technically not recommended for children under 2, and the dosing will need adjusting from what's listed on the bottle. Gwen took some for a few nights because of a throat infection, and her dose was about half the smallest dose marked on the cup that comes with the bottle.
Also, unfortunately for us, while it didn't make her more wired, it also didn't help her sleep at all either. Boo.
Maybe I don't have a heightened sense of smell, but I've never smelled any vagina on my pants. -- TSD
